for the first time in 6 years i have no known vacation destination to go to. so i need some help to determine where to make like a good american and burn gas and spend on worthless trinkets to bring home.

couple of conditions:
1. has to be within 2 days driving distance of louisville, kentucky
2. has to be within the continental united states.
3. has to enough attractions around to take up a week's worth of vacation time plus 2 days i can request off if necessary.

destinations involving colorado avalanche hockey or chicago cubs baseball won't hurt, although i think at this point i can rule out cubs games at wrigley.

San Antonio is a great place to visit. Love the Riverwalk!
If a week is too long there, you could spend a couple of the days in Austin.

Or, if you're vacationing in late February, there's always Mardi Gras in New Orleans!

When is this vacation? What time of year?

Spring is a nice time in the DC area Cherry blossoms etc. A few days in DC, get your picture with Obama on your visit to the whitehouse. Visit the monuments, take in a few Museum's ( Don't miss Air & Space museum) Plenty of shows at the Kennedy Center. then head south Stopping off at Kings Dominion, for a little fun, then Get your history in williamsburg or more fun at Bush Gardens, Then head back home.

How about Orlando, FL?

You have Disney World, Universal Studios, Kennedy Space Center, the beach, Tampa Bay, etc. all within an hour or so drive of Orlando.

New York City, too, though driving there is a tad suicidal - and if that doesn't do it, the parking prices will have you wanting to kill yourself :)

But lots to see and do!

Tell everyone you are going out of town, you'll be out of touch so you don't have to answer the phone, go hide your vehicle some where, just stock up on food and beer. Stay home, sleep, relax and just rest your ass off. Now to me that is the ultimate vacation.

I always hate going places and calling it a freaking vacation because most of the time I am more tired that when I left. Usually when I do the vacation thing. I got do stuff for the first 3 or 4 days then take the rest of the two weeks and do just what I said above. I go back to work feeling wonderful!

Now THAT is good advice! Vacations are too much work.

But, if you have to go somewhere, I could recommend the Outer Banks of NC. They're as close to an unspoiled beach (in places) as you'll find on the East Coast...south of Maine, anyway. Lots of history and side trips, too. Just go before hurricane season.

I agree with Aaron...San Antonio & Austin are great destinations. That was my vacation last winter (with a little side trip to see TulaneJeff in New Orleans), and it was a blast!
