According to a report by Techcrunch (later confirmed by HP) online music service nuTsie (Owned by Melodeo), a Lala competitor, was acquired by HP in a deal valued at $30-35 Million.
Although not as well know as other services like Pandora, Slacker or Spotify, Techcrunch states sources saying, its website attracts a little over 2 million uniques a month and nuTsie apps (for iPhone, Android and Blackberry) have enjoyed 2 million downloads with roughly 60% being the flagship app. The company already has partnerships with a range of carriers and cellphone companies including Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint.
TechCrunch reports, Nutsie 3.0 will apparently let you copy your entire iTunes library to the cloud and access any song on demand
Earlier this year, Melodeo's Dave Dederer described the company's latest iPhone app, Effin Genius, as "Pandora on steroids."
"Effin Genius looks at all of the music files and playlists on your iPhone or iPod and then uses our own proprietary collaborative filter to generate new playlists based on the music you already have," said Dederer, a former member of the band Presidents of the United States of America.
HP spokeswoman Mylene Mangalindan confirmed the purchase stating "Melodeo is one of the only companies which possess the technology to aggregate a consumer’s digital media, manage it in the cloud and stream it to the user on any device, along with additional streams of content. HP is always on the lookout for interesting innovative technology, especially as it develops its cloud-based offerings. While it is premature for us to unveil specific plans as it relates to Melodeo, we expect to use this technology to deliver digital content across multiple devices and platforms."
This is good news for HP who recently acquired Palm makers of WebOS. Although late to the game, HP and nuTsie could become serious competitors in the mobile market.
