GM to pare support of NASCAR

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- General Motors is planning to cut back on its support of NASCAR teams in all of the sanctioning body's professional series.

Chevrolet spokesman Terry Rhadigan says GM, which is reorganizing through bankruptcy, is discussing what he described as incremental cutbacks in support. He says cuts will be made soon and that the discussions are "indeed NASCAR-wide."

Rhadigan would not say if one series would be affected more than others, nor would he say the size of the cuts or how much GM spends on NASCAR. The automaker, through its Chevrolet brand, provides cash and other support to teams including engines and parts.

I predict Dodge leaves by the end of the year, GM stays, but only for a few teams, Toyota takes the manufactures championships for the near future, Hendrick is forced to move to Toyota in 2010.

Anybody see any differently?

I dont see Chev cutting ALL support despite what they are saying in the media. Im fairly confident Hendrick and Childress will still recieve some sort of support.

Sorry to see it...more so for the folks who lost jobs...but....NASCAR has gone without any support from the auto makers in the past...and will do so again.

Note: I drove thru the heart of car country this last week...lots of trucking jobs lost hauling parts/pieces, lots of parts/pieces businesses forced to close...saw 3 major production plants completely closed....also a huge BF Goodrich plant...completely shut down. Our sport will continue...but, some things won't. All the best to those that lost their jobs.

I guess Toyota joining Nascar isn't such a bad thing afterall. Hopefully Honda and Nissan will join the party.

This might be a good thing to smaller teams that are surviving on no sponsorship from the manufactures like GM. It may help to break up a mega team or two, also :)

What if they cut support to all teams except for the cores of Hendrick & Childress?

Don't usually get involved in "what if" discussions...but, if they do...they do...that's business decisions made by businessmen for the benefit of their business...nothing to do with trying to make the races better or worse. Winners just get more money in life...

I hope Honda, Nissan, & Kia all come into the sport :)

There was a time when AMC, Mercury, Oldsmobile, Pontiac all used to be part if the sport. Might make for better racing, but they better get into the sport now before costs get even higher :worried:

Frankly, I'd wait until this out-of-control administration is out of the White House.

Considering the end of last Sunday's race, it looked like several teams had their fuel budgets cut...

It's politically incorrect right now, but I think NASCAR should take away a race from Michigan. Sure, you're car companies are in the area, but are we going to have one in Japan to be fair for Toyota? What about one in Italy to be fair to Dodge/Fiat? Besides, the economy sucks there which means nobody has any money to spend on a race... And it's not going to change anytime soon.
