Ever had "Oscillating" sound?

My dad's Starmate2 power jack broke. Radio worked fine up until this.

I got him a used refurb: You can hear the audio for 2 seconds, then it goes out for 2 seconds, and repeats forever. Sometims you'll get uninterrupted sound for a few minutes, but usually once the oscillating starts, it continues forever.

I returned the radio, got another ST2 refurb.

SAME OSCILLATING AUDIO!!!

Now my dad lives 900 miles away, so I haven't been able to test it. However I did have him try it at home with the AC adapter and in the car with the DC adapter to eliminate that.. Still oscillates. So then I had him try a home antenna and 2 car antennas. Same problem.

The fact that I have now returned 2 radios points to my dad doing something wrong, but I can't imagine what that could be. I'm convinced that there is common problem with these older radios.

I told him that it's time to update to a Sportster 4 or 5.

Has anyone else ever had a similar experience to shed light on this?
Thanks.

Have you tried a new antenna? Maybe it went bad.

IIRC, there was also a bad batch of SL2's with oscillation issues...but that was a while ago.

Live radio, but you only hear 2 seco nds, then sound goes out for 2 seconds, and repeats.

Has happened now on 2 different starmate replays. Have tried 4 antennas now. It's not the antenna. It's not reception because it happens everywhere, home car, regardless of location.

When you turn on the antenna power meter:
10 ... 1 ... 10 ... 1 ... 10 ... 1 etc......

Like I said, many antennas, 2 radios, even bought a brand new antenna.

Get a Stiletto 2,I have NO reception problems when mobile.zero-
Other radio I have is the Sportster replay it also has no issues.
I think the starmates have troubles....
Call sirius ,they may give you a cheapo radio that works. They did that for me when I needed one.

Never heard of this either and clearly he needs to upgrade if the same tuner is going the same thing. It could also be something that is interfering with the signal, but since you say it does it everyone, who knows. I'd try a different radio if it does it, then he has other problems not related to the service.

Do you have a wireless router near your radio?

Nope, no wifi.. This even happens driving down the highway.

It's my dad's radio. I tried to replace his starmate with the strong FM. After failing twice, I upgraded him to a sportster4. He hasn't gotten it yet. If it happens with this radio, there's really something screwy going on. If not, there is some of issue with starmate replays.

BTW - I don't think this happens when listening off of a terrestrial repeater.

I use a sportster replay as my home radio. Mine has an fm transmittion radius of about 3 inches. All the ones sold after a specific date have been neutered.
