Hockey season just ended. Basketball season just ended. I propose a DRC Madness to determine the all-time greatest major-league baseball player – or at least the greatest in the opinion of the few of us who actually vote. Will it be Babe Ruth? Willie Mays? Mickey Mantle? Cy Young? Hank Aaron? Pete Rose? Lou Gehrig? Ted Williams? Joe Shlabotnik?

That is a good idea. You, of course, would do the right thing and remain fair and impartial. You would not cast a vote for former Phillies/Brewers pitcher Randy Wolf or former St. Louis Browns outfielder Jimmy Wolf.

Right?

I never heard of Randy and Jimmy Wolf. Let me guess you just mention them because of my username Wolf?
Yes, I'm clever that way. (Hey, that would make a good song title!) Randy Wolf pitched for the Phillies from 1999 through 2006, then pitched for a succession of six other teams before retiring in 2015. Rightfielder Jimmy Wolf played for Louisville from 1882 to 1891. The team was originally the Eclipse and became the Colonels in 1885. Jimmy Wolf played in three games for the St. Louis Browns in 1892. He was also known as Chicken Wolf. Teammate Pete Browning gave him that nickname after Wolf ate a lot of chicken before a game and then committed several errors.

The poll officially closed and the winner is MLB. There will be two separate brackets one for teams and the other for all-time greatest players.

I already have the 32 bracket figured out for 30 teams. Once the teams are ranked, the top teams will get a first-round bye.

Now you guys can start nominating players and hopefully if we have an enough nominated around 4th of July. The madness will get started next weekend.

Sadly, Joe Shlabotnik never made it to the major leagues. I nominate Cy Young, Lou Gehrig, Ernie Banks, Stan Musial, Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams.

I don't want Tommy Lasorda cursing at me for not nominating any Dodgers. In 1972, 36-year-old Sandy Koufax became the youngest player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He pitched four no-hitters and one perfect game, won three Cy Young Awards and two World Series MVP awards and led the National League in ERA five straight years. I nominate Sanford "Sandy" Koufax.
