The Cardinals' history may not be very glamorous and storied, but they do have a lot of it. I heard something today that I didn't realize; the Cardinal franchise's roots can be traced back to 1898 when they were called the Morgan Athletic Club, an amateur team in Chicago. In 1913, the club turned professional (known then as the Racine Cardinals, named after Racine Avenue in Chicago). And in 1920, they became a charter member of the American Professional Football Association, or what we now call the NFL. Then, as I'm sure everyone knows, the Chicago Cardinals moved to St. Louis in 1960 and then again to Phoenix in 1988.
The Cardinal franchise is the oldest existing professional football team. I thought that was pretty interesting. And what do they have to show for it? Two NFL Championships (1925 and 1947).
As far as this weekend's game goes, I think I'm going to go for it and pick the Cardinals. The early line for this game started out at 3 in favor of Philly, and now it's up to 4. I don't think the majority of NFL viewers can wrap their heads around the fact that THE ARIZONA CARDINALS CAN GO TO THE SUPER BOWL?!?!?! Hence, very few people are picking them. But look, what happened in the '60's and '70's and '80's and '90's and even 2007...it all means nothing. It's about this team right now, and they've pretty much dominated their past two games. I'm taking the Arizona Cardinals. Which, among other things, if you're a Houston Texans fan, they represent HOPE!!! If the Arizona freaking Cardinals can do it, get this far at least, then one of these years the Texans can make such a run. So go Cards. I like them to win straight-up, but go ahead and give me the 4 points anyway, Vegas.
