The Smithereens! Oh hell yes! Now there was a band that deserved to make it much much bigger that they did. I was surprised that we didn't hear more from the Afghan Wigs too.

Great post.

They are a great live band! But they did at least get 2 Top 40 hits, so that's something - although sometimes that could be considered a curse :hhh: <-- I have no idea what this smiley really means, but it feels right.

As Paul Westerberg once said, "I just want to be Big Star big"....

Funny you mention Paul Westerberg cause I was thinking The Replacements fit...

Let's don't get crazy here. The Smithereens were HUGE in the late 80's/early 90's. "A Girl Like You" was a smash hit (though "Behind the Wall of Sleep" is my fave).

The Connells, I'm once the fence. They had a reasonable early 90's college radio hit with "Get A Gun," but I wouldn't say they made it big. I'll let it stand. :p

The Replacements never had a true hit, but most everybody that was anybody 20 years ago knew the words to "You Be Me," and Paul Westerberg was on the Singles soundtrack (the best--perhaps, the only--grunge movie soundtrack)...so I'd say not big, but bigger than the Connells.

Blue Rodeo was a cool band that never made it big. Not really big, anyway.

Great post.

Afghan Whigs got a lot of college play - big on campus. I still listen to their music quite a bit. Most stuff probably too "raw" for commercial radio consumption.

Another Ohio band that never made it was the Michael Stanley Band. Absolutely HUGE in NE Ohio in the late 70s thru the 80s. Sellouts in four straight nights at an outdoor theater (nearly 75,000 total). A full week of sellouts in a smaller hall (8 nights, 3000 per). Had a video on MTV for a while but didn't get the ball rolling at the national level. Their minor "hits" didn't even have the normal lead singer (Michael Stanley) singing and were more poppy in nature. Similar to Bob Seger, who made it big during the same period. MSB didn't have the same luck.

Actually it's "I'll Be You" (great song btw).

I'm thinking there's almost too many bands to name....Sonic Youth, The Stranglers, Catherine Wheel, Pavement, Teenage Fanclub, The Stone Roses, The Pixies, The dB's, etc.

Dramarama wrote a great song about not making it to the big time:

Blue Rodeo is selling out arenas in Canada (where they're from) but can't get arrested here. I do have a few of their albums and they are very good. They're kind of like what Wilco is in a way.

And there was the Weird Al cover: "You do me for a while, and I'll do you." :p

That is indeed a great song.

See, those bands seem semi-famous to me, but I was an alt rock fan in 1992 ;), so I may be biased.

I did gather that they're bigger north of the border. I liked Casino, especially the single "Time." They were alt-country before there was such a thing. Americana? Canadiana?

And before $#&% Sirius dropped "The Border." Man, that was like 5 years ago. Let it go, CF!

Bands keep popping into my head.

Where did the Lo Fi Allstars go?
They were cool and should have been much bigger.

That's good news! I hope they still have the edge.

(Their sound that is. . . not the guy. . . although that could be interesting.)
