How is it that all the good hip hop channels were either neutered or straight up cut because of this merger? This whole thing is starting out as a complete train wreck from my standpoint.

I was disappointed that Hip Hop Nation's page on the Sirius site didn't list any Old School programs or any of the Backspin DJs.

I searched for comments from Lady B, Dana Dane and Red Alert on the internets to see if they moved over to Hip Hop Nation or got new gigs, but couldn't find anything.

Anyone hear/see anything about the Backspin DJs?

Shade seems to be our only place for hip hop now, and it's uncensored as far as I can tell. HHN has an occasional dirty word, but it's a very slim playlist now, and censored. Angela Yee said this morning she didn't know of the new changes, she read about them on Allhiphop.com in an article about NORE's Millitainment show making it through the cuts. She said she did notice that a lot of people that were typically up in the studios, weren't around anymore, and that she was pissed about it.

I actually talked with a "higher up" at Sirius today to get the scoop. Backspin is not coming back, however old skool hip/hop & rap programming will be added to the channels that play hip hop & rap. In fact , each weekend there will be specialty old skool shows of 5 hours to help fill the need for this music genre. Its better than zip. I also got some positive news on other R&B programming possiblities. :)

I hope your right about the specialty shows --5 hours a week is better than nothing
(Although I doubt you're wrong, I hope you are wrong about Backspin not coming back. Is the sat rad audience -or potential audience- for '40s music really bigger than '70s-'90s rap?)

No shit...merge the 40's channel with Franks place or XM's standards and bring back old skool HH or Backspin/Chrome.

HHN had the Ali Shaheed In the booth show tonight, and DJ Rasta Root show, as well as NORE's millitainment show. Uncensored. So far, the hip hop is during the late evening on 40. These shows have a very different feel from the Sirius model, but also have seemed to adjust to the new airwaves.

What I was told is that the old skool hip hop/rap channels are rated very low in listenership, and we know that means. I would think they would have wider appeal, however I guess not. Perhaps the 20-40 yr old urban audience that grew up on that isnt purchasing sat radio very much?

Perhaps SiriusXM should spend some money on advertising because 90% of the people that I've turned on to Satellite Radio has bought and kept it and I'm not talking about a couple of people the majority of my church and lodge members purchased and kept it.
I think there was a poll done on SBS about the ethnicity of the Sirius audience and I believe the Urban audience was larger than Sirius thinks or cares about. As hard as it is to to get new subs why would Sirius choose to piss off an entire demographic. As much as I loved XM Slacker is really starting to look good but I;m gonna hang in there a few more months to see what happens.

Stellar, so now I can listen to new crappy rap all day in the hopes that I hear one old, good song. This was an idiotic move by Sirius.

agreed on that one. What the hell is the point if they are playing all the same crap that's on regular radio?

I mentioned this in the "pandora" forum, but I have created a tribute to Backspin at Pandora.com. Just go under Share, click "Find a shared station", and enter "Bandit's Backspin". I will constatntly be working to improve and expand this station's playlist.

Excellent, thanks man. Any objection to setting up a thread (or just using this one) for seed suggestions?
