Keep thinking about a discussion Howard and Robin had recently regarding AGT. Neither one watches it any more. Sure they are both pissed off at Simon for maneuvering for Howard's seat but think of all the promotion Howard did touting the wonder of the show and all of the gushing by Robin and the rest. It's as if America's "talent" had no independent entertainment value and that the only reason for watching the show was to witnesss Howard telling the contestants what America likes or doesn't like about them and "you're going to Vegas" and shit like that.
 
Same here. I have not watched an episode this season and only watched the last 4 seasons due to Howard being a judge.
 
I'm sure if a caller brought-up the topic (and Howard didn't hang-up on him), Howard would go on some angry tirade about how he never asked anyone to watch the show. Of course, whether we watched or not, we were subjected to AGT through THSS.

I should mention, though, that Howard watched shows like AGT and American Idol before he became a host. So perhaps if he wasn't soured by the experience, he'd still be watching now.
 
I admit I did not really give the show much of a chance. I could not bear Howard's judge shtick. During the bits that I watched, Howard would put on his talk show shtick (speaking in a loud voice) and say something stupid like "this is what America wants" (I saw him run up on the stage to comfort the crying kid he had buzzed off telling him "you're going to Vegas!" although he wasn't. Quite cringe worthy). For those of you who watched the show to see Howard, I assume you were entertained. What was entertaining? I can listen to Radio Show Howard do commercials and be entertained. What was I missing? I am not being sarcastic. I am curious.

The short answer is that (based on Howard's fans on this forum) people tuned-in, hoping to get the real Howard, and quickly gave up. So your observations are shared by most of us.

During his first season on AGT, he was more like radio Howard, but the producers quickly put a stop to that. So he turned into another generic "reality judge" personality, spewing platitudes like "that's what America is all about" and "you need to up your game".

I'm not a reality/talent show fan; I never liked American Idol, but I tried to watch AGT when Howard was on. I got through about half of his 1st season, and it was brutal. I realized that AGT has 2 giant flaws: once you've seen all the acts, you have to keep seeing them do essentially the same thing over and over. And at some point, you realize that pitting a magician against a country duo, or child dancers against a snake wrestler, or a dog act against a rapper, is idiotic.
 
I watched Howard's first two seasons. I was expecting Howard to be brutally honest, and he was politely honest. The first season had good chemistry between him, Sharon, and Howie.

The second season didn't have good judge chemistry, but I still watched hoping for a little (and I mean this respectfully) titty from Mel B and Heidi (cuing Richard Christy's voice: in the late 90s / early 2000s, Heidi was my faaaaaaaaavorite!). Unfortunately, they would wear short dresses with a high neckline and sit behind the desk.

The "talent" wasn't anything that rocked my world except a couple of contestants. However, I can watch that on YouTube in five minutes and not invest hours a week all summer.

That's another thing about all these shows; they drag-out results. Some of them do 2-hour "results" shows, wherein there's zero new acts. Just recaps, behind-the-scenes, and teasers.

Money. They can get in more commercials that way...and that's with sponsors for various segments.

We were subjected to MFB screech about how awesome such-and-such contestant was or how awesome the overall show was. If you dig through this forum, you'll find discussion about how the ratings were down. Remember how KOAB would mention the ratings at first, then he stopped doing so?

Just like how Howard really believes he has 30 million listeners, he'll credit himself with AGT's downfall.
 
I just found this in the latest Hollywood Deadline. It must be killing America's Judge:

“With the addition of Simon, the chemistry between our judges has grown even stronger and it’s easy to see how much enthusiasm they bring to the show night after night,” said Paul Telegdy, President of Alternative and Reality Group at NBC Entertainment. “Nick adds a boundless energy as host that ties everything together. We’re thrilled to have such a strong team returning for Season 12.”
Summer to date, America’s Got Talent is averaging a 3.0 rating, 12 share in adults 18-49 and 13.6 million viewers overall with its Tuesday edition. The Tuesday AGT is maintaining 100% of its year-ago rating in 18-49 and is up 9% in total viewers, making this its most-watched season in five years. Talent has ranked No. 1 among entertainment shows on the broadcast networks every week so far this summer in both 18-49 and total viewers, according to NBC and Nielsen.

To sum up: Howard in his late-50s, early 60s was weak attracting a young demo.

IMO, twenty years ago Howard would have been a huge draw for that demo, but that Howard wouldn't have been caught dead doing that job in the first place.
