In Six Months, Microsoft Will Pull The Plug On Windows 7 Support - Yahoo Finance

Microsoft is warning customers that the end is soon coming for Windows 7 in much the same way it came for Windows XP earlier this year. Microsoft will end free mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015.

That means no more security patches if hackers find holes, no more updated features or performance improvements.

By the way, Microsoft also set an end-of-life of mainstream support for Windows 8 (including the latest version, Windows 8.1), for January 9, 2018.

I've been enjoying Mavericks on my iMac. I wonder how long Apple will support it. My parents have Windows 7. I better warn them now.

That's typical for mainstream support for any Windows OS...they will still offer updates for another 5 years afterwards.

That is right. The normal Windows 7 user will continue to see security patches and updates until 2020. No need to dump windows 7 yet, HP and Dell still offer it. I doubt we'll see another service pack.

The original article implies no more security updates.

This sounds much better. Bought my son a Dell laptop for college two years ago just for W7 Pro. Idea for his academic needs. Desktop has W7 Home premium so I'll roll the dice til operating both machines becomes impractical.
