Occasionally I enjoy listening to other artists/bands cover songs. Sometimes I wonder which version is better, the original or the remakes?

I do like the Animals version. But for me personally I have heard FFDP so many times I prefer that version.

Here my rank preference.

  1. FFDP
  2. The Animals
  3. Dolly Parton
  4. Jody Miller

Just an observation - if you search "who did it best" or "WDIB", there's about 20 threads. But I don't think any of them cover this song.

Of the dozens of versions I came across, I like these 2:

Muse

This is my favorite, by The White Buffalo, as heard on the Sons of Anarchy season 4 finale

When I did a search, I used cover songs. I didn't think of samples and now I see all the "Who Did It Best" threads back in 2016.

See that why I been out of this music loop for quite a few years now.

With your two additions songs, I like the Muse version. White Buffalo is alright, but not digging it.

I also see back in the past there are Top 5 and Music Challenge threads.

Maybe some of these old music games threads could try and make a come back?

In April 1970 a version of The House Of The Rising Sun by Frijid Pink, a Detroit quartet, reached #7 nationally and #15 on the KHJ Boss 30 here in Los Angeles. And before anyone tells me "We have a thread for that," please know that this thread is it.

"Hold Me Now"

Original:

Cover:

It's the first track on the 50 First Dates soundtrack (Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore)

This is just an excuse for me to point out how bad I think the cover is. It's the closest thread I could find to the topic.

If we're talking covers, I have to throw these in

Probably the most well-done cover I know

Gary Jules – Mad World

My most enjoyable cover

Bowling For Soup – Baby One More Time

And this one is either great or terrible, I can't decide. But it's something

Tori Amos – Smells Like Teen Spirit

My wife loves the first one

I like the bottom one, but not near as much as the original. But I like her cover of Led Zep "Thank You" better than the original. She has a bunch of great covers like "Famous Blue Raincoat", "Angie", "A Case Of You" and "Home On The Range". Her cover of "Do It Again" is weird, but kinda intriguing.

"Cum On Feel The Noize"

Slade (original) vs Quiet Riot (cover).

I go with QR. That's my favorite guitar solo of all time, btw. Perfect blend of melody, technique and fitting in with the sound of the song.

Slade's original went nowhere. QR not only made the song a hit they gave Slade an all be it brief resurgence with their album "Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply". My vote goes to QR as well.

"Smokin' In The Boys Room"
Brownsville Station (original) vs Motley Crue (cover).

I gotta go with Crue, even though their fashion went from cool spiky leather to uncool pink satin.

Ok maybe both looks are bad. But 13 year old me liked the spiky leather and 15 year old me hated the pink satin.

And I don't think Leann Rimes should have covered the song at all. I mean, what exactly is she smokin' in the men's room....?

"Knockin On Heaven's Door"
Bob Dylan (original) vs Guns N Roses (cover)

I'm not much of a fan of either. But forced to listen to one, I'm going with GNR ... despite that annoying "heiy!! heiy!! heiy heiy yeah!!" that Axl felt he had to throw in several times. I can even hear his Edith Bunker-esque wailing just looking at the photo below.
