"It's A Wonderful Life"?

SBV wins!

It is "It's a Wonderful Life", the 1946 holiday classic starring Jimmy Stewart about a man down on his luck who realizes what the world would be without him.

The movie was based from a 1943 short story called "The Greatest Gift". It was a critical and commercial flop at the box office, because people thought it was too depressing for a post-WWII America.

My two other clues would have been "I was the subject of a major court case regarding copyright laws" and "every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings".
