The number-one songs on the Hot 100 in 1969 were by, respectively, Marvin Gaye, Tommy James & The Shondells, Sly & The Family Stone, Tommy Roe, 5th Dimension, Beatles, Henry Mancini, Zager & Evans, Rolling Stones, Archies, Temptations, Elvis Presley, 5th Dimension (again), Beatles (again), Steam, Peter Paul & Mary and Diana Ross/Johnny Bristol (although the label credited Diana Ross & The Supremes).

I'm pretty sure I know the answer now. The lead singer of one of those groups was 33 when they first charted. I'm also pretty sure somebody here will figure out the answer and post it before I do. If that happens, I won't be angry. I won't consider that person to be an arch-villain.

Well, clue #4 rules out Ron Dante. He was the lead singer on the 1969 hit Sugar Sugar. The Archies had a number-one hit but couldn't go out on tour because they weren't a real group. They were characters in comic books and cartoons. I figured Dante also sang on the theme songs for the seven Archie cartoon series produced by Filmation Studios.

One of the above three guesses is correct. I will share some useless trivia: Dottie West had 45 top-40 country hits, 1963-84, but her only top-40 hit on the Hot 100 was her 1981 duet with Kenny Rogers, What Are We Doin' In Love. She was 48 years old then.

Kim Carnes

Congrats, Aaron!

It's Kim Carnes, whose 1981 hit "Bette Davis Eyes" was the #1 song on May 26, the day I was born. Kinda funny you mention Filmation, Channel 98, because Carnes sang backup vocals to the Fat Albert theme song.

After years of being a backup singer and such, she finally had her first hit record in 1978 with "You're A Part of Me" with Gene Cotton. It peaked at #36 on the pop charts. In 1980, she co-wrote Kenny Rogers' "Gideon" album, featuring the #4 hit "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer".

Congrats Aaron, and that was a great game King! Really challenging. So now that I know the "69" is not your birth year, I guess it's just a Ronnie the limo driver thing. But I still don't know what you do for work.

Congratulations, Mister Aaron! But Mister King should know better than to mention the Fat Albert show. That is a highly inappropriate word. We say "weight-challenged" now. :p

As Mister King noted, Kim Carnes' first top-40 pop hit was the duet with Gene Cotton, You're A Part Of Me. In January 1976, her original solo version of the song reached #32 on the adult contemporary chart. It was from her second album, cleverly titled Kim Carnes. None of her first three albums charted. Here is the song. Hurry and listen!
