I can't be alone in thinking this is utter bullshit with the way he is being treated.

So he smoked some weed, big deal. It couldn't have been that bad because he won 8 gold medals!!! Proof that weed isn't really that bad for you.

Leave the guy alone.

By the way, I didn't start this because I'm one of those big weed smoking adults. I haven't smoked weed in more than 10 years. But really, just leave the guy alone.

Whoever took that picture and sold it should be sued for defemation of character and lost wages.

I'm not sure who the bigger asshole is in this situation... The guy who took the picture and sent it in or the sheriff who said he would charge Phelps with a crime if he determined that he smoked marijuana in his county.

All I can say about this is the guy who took the photo is an asshole and I hope Michael Phelps doesn't loose his medals!

I'll buy into that. Get off his back, and beat down the ass clown that took the picture. He was probably hitting the bong too! He took that picture with only the purpose being to hurt Phelps.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not in the Phelps phan club, in fact I find him annoying and was getting very tired of how every sentence uttered during the Olympics had his name in it. But it was grass, not child porn!

On the other hand, Phelps should have known better than do that around people he didn't know.

Last time I checked, the crimes would be possession or under the influence. Neither can really be proven after the fact with just that photo....

I'm sure its the only crime going down in his county. And he missed it... :loser:

The irony is that the guy who sold the pic probably spent the money on weed.

It's ridiculous to treat pot so seriously. He's just more proof that responsible, casual use is perfectly fine (same as alcohol). I've probably smoked it 3-4 times, the most recent being over 10 years ago, so I'm not exactly a pothead. Criminalizing pot is one of the stupidest things in this country.

Kellogg's has decided not to renew Phelps' sponsorship contract. Which is kind of a bonehead move, in my opinion. To me, a pothead pushing cereal is the kind of commercial that makes perfect sense. One of the best foods to go for when the munchies hit.

He's been suspended by the US Swimming Association. He didn't break any rules. He let down the poor kids.

USA Swimming suspends Michael Phelps for 3 months
By PAUL NEWBERRY and BETH HARRIS, AP Sports Writers

...“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based national governing body said in a statement.

They should publically release the name of the guy who took the picture, so everybody knows who the real asshole is. Since Clinton's "I didn't inhale" situation, I thought we finally came around the curve regarding pot and "experimenting" in one's past. Didn't Obama do a little bit of experiencing in his past? THe Phelps picture will make a nice cover for high times, and give Cheech and Chong some new material for the rest of their tour.

If he had been drinking a beer bong its ok?

fact:
There are hundreds of alcohol overdose deaths each year, yet there has never been a marijuana overdose death in history.

Right!!

If he'd been photographed bonging a beer or pouring bottles of hard liquor down his throat, this wouldn't have even been news.

If he came out with a sex tape, he'd been on all the talk shows and hailed as a cool guy.

I agree with the poster that said they should publish the person's name that took and sold the photo so he could be publicly derailed.

It's times like this that I wish I had some sort of national talk show so I could publicly defend him and try to sway the public. So far, I haven't met or spoken with anyone that thinks he should be in trouble for this.

Only a matter of time...
With how fed up smokers are being unfairly singled out, he''ll be lucky if he only get 'pubicly derailed'.

Soon he'll have to wonder where the next sucker punch is coming from.

As for taking any medals back, how can they if they let someone that tested positive keep theirs...
Ross Rebagliati (born July 14, 1971 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) is a Canadian professional snowboarder. He turned pro in 1991. He was the first ever to win an Olympic gold medal for this sport at the 1998 Winter Olympics. After winning the gold, he was found to have marijuana in his circulatory system and he was automatically disqualified. This decision was eventually overturned, largely on the basis that marijuana is not a performance-enhancing drug, and Rebagliati was given back the medal.

Of course marijuana isn't a perfomance-enhancing drug.

If anything, it's a performance-reducing drug. Michael Phelps should be given twice as many gold medals as a result. ;)

Well, we've got to admit, that was a REALLY stupid move on Phelps' behalf. Not smoking pot, but smoking a bong in a room full of people that he didn't personally know.

I'm glad Speedo and Omega are sticking with him. I can understand Kellogg not renewing his contract since that cereal is marketed to children, and there would be a backlash from parents.
