Never been into the super-amazing guitar virtuoso stuff. I respect it. I can't even come close. But I've never gotten into it.

If I had to pick another instrumental I like a lot, I just remembered Def Leppard "Switch 625" (starts right after "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" on High And Dry). And like the NIN song, no outstanding performances within it, just a great tune. And I like "Axel F" but not enough to be on my list.

Looking at a big list of rock instrumental songs and all instrumentals to make the top 20 now for more ideas ....

Whipping this up on the fly:

FAV INSTRUMENTALS

1. Nine Inch Nails "Just Like You Imagined"
2. Edgar Winter "Frankenstein"
3. Eric Johnson "Cliffs Of Dover"
4. Herbie Hancock "Rockit"
5. Def Leppard "Switch 625"
6. Harold Faltermayer "Axel F"
7. Van Halen "Eruption"
8. Champs "Tequila"
9. Vangelis "Chariots Of Fire"
10. John 5 and The Creatures "Here's To The Crazy Ones"
11. Hot Butter "Popcorn"
12. Chemical Brothers "Block Rockin' Beats" (if a couple samples are allowed)
13. Crystal Method "Name Of The Game" (same as above)
14. Faith No More "Woodpecker From Mars"
15. Surfaris "Wipe Out"

Now we’re talkin!
Switch 625 is a great one.

Chemical & Crystal are 2 of my favorites. If I could find enough like minded musicians, I’d love to have a band that plays Crystal Method attitude stuff that’s guitar oriented and live.

Time for the expert to chime-in here!

Here's an early pop instrumental favorite
Henry Mancini – The Pink Panther (Original movie theme)

IMO, one of the best pop instrumentals of all time. This is the version brilliantly featured in a recent series
Mason Williams – Classical Gas (The Queen’s Gambit scene)

It's got "pop" right in the name
Hot Butter (Gershon Kingsley) - Popcorn

An insanely talented Keith Emerson leads this one
Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Hoedown (live)

Speaking of insane, here's the Dutch band's one radio hit
Focus – Hocus Pocus (live on The Midnight Special)

And more. We have to include this one
E.L.O. – Fire On High

One of my favorites. I love that the crowd is singing along to an instrumental
Rush – YYZ (live)

One of the more recent radio hits (2003). A great group of musicians
Nickel Creek – Smoothie Song

Do these count? I think they each have a single word spoken at the end.
I generally see them on lists of instrumental songs, even though they don't meet the strict definition. Same with songs where only sampled voices are used. For me, I include them too.

Like the Beastie Boys song "Pow". It just has the word "pow" said in it, and I consider it (basically) an instrumental.

Also, like 2 Live Crew "Mega Mix III", which has several vocal samples in it from cutting and scratching, I would call that an instrumental too.

I could make a list of my favorite instrumentals – but I won't. I will just post two of my favorites. Velvet Waters reached #51 on the Hot 100 in July 1959. The Megatrons were a group of New York studio musicians led by John Summers and featuring Heyood Henry on clarinet. They released three more singles but none of them charted. One was titled Tootie Flutie. Gak! The Village Stompers were a Dixieland octet from Greenwich Village. Washington Square reached #2 in November 1963. They later had hits with From Russia With Love and Fiddler On The Roof.
