Cypress Hill

Genre: hip hop, occasionally rap rock

Discovered: Don't remember, but it was "Brain" back in '93 or '94. I didn't get into anything else by them at all until "Rock Superstar" on MTV in 2000. That's when I began to dig into their back catalogue, especially when a drummer in a former band suggested covering "I Ain't Goin' Out Like That" somewhere around 2003.

Other: I may own more songs that feature a guest appearance of a rapper from Cypress than I own actual Cypress songs. They've both done a ton of collabs with other artists and also a few side projects.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Rock Superstar (rap rock)
2. Insane In The Brain (hip hop)
3. Rise Up (rap rock)
4. A Man (rap metal)
5. Armada Latina (hip pop, aka pop rap, which is rare for them)

Danzig

Genre: stoner rock, hard rock (some say he's metal, but I think most of his songs aren't)

HIGH FIVE:

1. Mother
2. Soul Eater
3. Can't Speak
4. Twist Of Cain
5. How The Gods Kill

Dave Gahan

Genre: alt-rock, alt-AOR (what I like of his), alternative (what I didn't get into)

Discovered: knew him already as frontman of Depeche Mode

Other: His first solo album is great, mix of alt-rock/alt-AOR (aka AAA). After that, he got decidedly more off-beat and lost me.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Dirty Sticky Floors
2. Hidden Houses
3. Stand Up
4. I Need You
5. Closer

David Lee Roth

Genre: hard rock

Discovered: knew him from VH

Other: His 1991 album Little Ain't Enough was the beginning of the end for him. Yes the album ain't good, but the title track is awesome. BTW his 1998 album DLR Band is all right, worth owning. You can hear his voice starting to go in a few spots but overall it's a good listen.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Yankee Rose
2. A Lil' Ain't Enough
3. Goin' Crazy!
4. Just Like Paradise
5. Bump And Grind

De La Soul

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: MTV "Me Myself & I"

Other: Two members released Plug 1 & Plug 2 Present... First Serve in 2012 and it's real good. I bought the actual CD. But I didn't include any songs from it on my list below since it isn't technically De La.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Me Myself & I
2. Oooh
3. Keepin' The Faith
4. A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays
5. This Is A Recording 4 Living

When Grace Slick likes you, that's saying something!

Might be worth checking out.

Jack White's doing the Dave Grohl thing, playing a different instrument in a side project. Ty Segall (Ty Segall Band and Fuzz) does it too. Talented guys.

Def Leppard

Genre: hard rock

Discovered: cousin

Other: One of my favs as a teen but don't listen much any more as an adult. If I'd made a 333 in the early 90s, it would be loaded with tracks from Pyromania and Hysteria instead of just one song from the band.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Photograph
2. Billy's Got A Gun
3. Die Hard The Hunter
4. Foolin'
5. Tear It Down (1987 Version)

Deftones

Genre: alt-metal, nu-metal

Discovered: same friend who gave me the Circle Of Dust cassette got me started. I went to see Pitchshifter and Quicksand live back in 1998 and Deftones were the headliner. I thought "I'll hang around for a few songs and if they're good I'll stay". I stayed for their whole set, it was amazing.

Other: Big fan of the first two albums. Third one is 50/50. Since then, they've become a two-or-three-good-songs-per-album band since. Too sluggish lately, not as much adrenaline. Or when they do give it some adrenaline, it has no groove you can get into. TRIVIA: they were signed by Madonna's record label: Maverick Records.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Head Up
2. My Own Summer
3. Nosebleed
4. Change (In The House Of Flies)
5. Back To School
