Does anyone here invest with them?

Thoughts?

Does anyone have any other suggestions for an investment firm?

People seem to think highly of Vanguard. They claim that their fees are low.

My folks invest with them. They say good things.

My only limitation is that I'm in a fairly small town but want store front accessability. Oppenheimer affords this where Vanguard does not.

Ahh yeah. Then you really have no choice. Vanguard does not have any 'retail' stores that I know of.

I haven't heard anything good or bad about Oppenheimer. Have a look at their fees and make sure that they don't nickel and dime you to death. And also make sure that the funds that interest you have a decent LONG-TERM track record. People tend to go for the fund that was hot in the last few months, but that does not always work out well down the road.

Why do you need a store front?

You're smarter than 99% of the "pros" out there. The only way for normal people to make money is to invest in well-diversified index funds and have faith that the global economy will grow over time. That is, unless you want to chase stocks and watch "Mad Money." You may as well go to Vegas, though. There's too much noise out there for any kind of logic to dictate stock prices. That's how the Dow got to 14,000...and to 6,600. Not based on fundamentals, but based on people's bullshit hysteria. "Put everything in stocks!" and nine months later "Sell all your stocks!"

I use Vanguard and Fidelity for their low fees (which you won't get from any company with a store front. I don't pay more than 0.25% for any of the funds I invest in...much less, usually.)

I haven't heard that name in a long time. I'm messing around with pennystockchasers just to get a hands on experience and if I make a couple of bucks maybe my sons' won't be afraid of the market like I am/was. People like Madoff has scared me from playing the market in the past.

Don't be afraid of the market. You have to own stocks if you want to make money--stocks across all sectors, large, medium and small-cap, domestic and foreign. Along with govt. debt, corporate paper, cash and even gold and commodity funds. The whole width and breadth of capitalism. You're betting for the long haul that capitalism will prosper. And if it doesn't, we're screwed anyway, so why not?

But be very afraid of playing the market. They don't open casinos in Vegas to lose money, after all.
