More races could be shown online

It would be nice if they can get this worked out.....

There's a chance you could be watching more races online this season. Right now, the only races you can watch online are the six TNT races since Turner owns all the online rights for the broadcasts. Thus, ESPN, Fox and ABC can't show any race live online. You can watch the TNT races on NASCAR.com's Race Buddy program, which last year featured live shots from four different vantage points. This year, you might get to see more NASCAR races online, so when the race goes to commercial on TV, you wouldn't have to miss anything. Here's what Lenny Daniels, Chief Operating Officer for Turner Sports told [Dustin Long] about the future of having more races shown online: "We are going to attempt to work out a deal with Fox and ESPN. It's an intersectional rights, is what it is. When Turner has all the rights (TV and Internet), we can show it any way we want. If you're ESPN, you don't want us doing anything during that live race window. That's what they bought. That's what they own. So we have to figure out a business plan to work with them and try to get a deal done. Believe me, we would love to have Race Buddy year-round and I think NASCAR would too but it all comes down to the business model. When I [Dustin Long] asked him if it was unlikely that more races would be shown online in 2010, Daniels said: "I wouldn't say that. We're trying. I don't think you're going to see it across the board for every race. We'll definitely do it for our races. We'll work with Fox. We came close to Fox last year on a few things (doing versions of Race Buddy)."

The NFL lets Sprint show their NFL Network Games on their mobile phones

Would be nice if we could watch races on our phones :worried:

Good article (was it by that famous pencil pusher Dustin Long?). :p

I sure hope to get more or all of the races online. I loved RaceBuddy but don't care for most of the tracks TNT covers.

Nascar needs to get control of this...NOW. Open up that bank account Mr. France.

I don't think that it has anything to do with NASCAR/Mr. France. Turner Broadcasting owns the NASCAR internet broadcasting rights through 2014. Turner is in control of what is allowed to be broadcast over the net. That's one of the reasons why SIRIUS/XM does not broadcast over the net from one of the online players.

Yes, that's true. But it doesn't make sense that nascar wouldn't own ALL nascar broadcast. They need to get control back. This was, IMO, a big mistake/oversight on nascar's part to lose control like that.

Perhaps I am not understanding it then. I thought NASCAR sold only the internet rights to Turner through 2014 and not the television rights. IMO once their contract expires NASCAR will once again own the rights and start their own broadcasting through the new media center that they've built either within or adjacent to the HOF in Charlotte, NC. I think at that point, SIRIUS/XM 128 will be available online with the rest of the SIRIUS/XM channels. :idunno:

I don't know all the back story....

But if they did sell the internet rights....that was a TOTALLY STUPID business decision. IMO.

But then again....what do I know? :p

Maybe, once upon a time...they needed the money?

I'd bet it was more like they wanted the money. NASCAR extended their relationship with Turner in January of 2008 to 2014. It's all about the money.

Every race is shown online already.

Heck, everything is online already. I was talking legitimately. If you find a site where they are broadcasting the Cup race and they aren't affiliated with Turner, don't advertise it. You'll ruin a very good thing.
