    What's your price range?

If you don't have one, Kimber all the way! Their Pro Carry II and and Ultra Carry are my favorites.

Also, if you like Rugers, the Ruger 1911 (if you can find one) seems to be very popular.

Just stay away from Hi-Points and other cheaply priced choices.

Some mid-range options are the Heckler & Koch USP or the Smith & Wesson MP (although, these aren't necessarily 1911s but are .45 ACP).

I'll probably be getting myself one of those brands down the road.

I think my dad has a Ruger. He also is a Sarah Palin-loving, Fox News-watching tea party looney...so he's probably spot-on in his choice of firearm. Get the Ruger.

A little too much pistol for my taste. If I need to bring down an elephant or blow someone in half sure. Ammo isn't cheap and neither is the kick. It serves it's purpose for those who want the stopping power the mini cannon possesses.

Since gun shows are a huge quarterly occurrence in SW Mo, I think it's the best way to swing a deal with a private owner. Dealers want to cover their overhead, shipping costs and profit margins.

You should do well with that budget. I haven't been pistol shopping in a long time, but eventually, I'll get my concealed carry. A buddy (could open a gun shop if he decided to sell his collection) has a couple of Kimbers that he really likes these days. He had a nice one that he carries, but it wasn't the cannon that you're looking for.

You should be able to find something very nice.

I still vote Kimber... although, they're almost too pretty to shoot.
