Suggestions? I'm supposed to move within a week and am thinking of picking him one up. Cheap is good... good is better.

Cheapest I've seen is 289, but it looks like there are alternatives.
A quick google product search shows the Sony BDP-S300 for 129-480. Lots of 5 star reviews, seems to be good feedback.

Try and get a Profile 2 blu-ray player. A lot of the cheaper ones are still in the Profile 1 land and need upgraded.
But personally, I'd wait one more year...remember when DVD players first came out and cost $300ish? Now, you can pick up a DVD player for $30.

The blueray movies themselves cost too much. I'll wait until the blueray discs are more reasonably priced.

That's an issue I'm running into as well. I'm thinking about focusing on the surround sound system more than the blue ray at this point. The blue ray players may drop in price a lot right after xmas. I'm trying to stay under $500.
I bought the Samsung BD-P1500 on Wednesday for $199.99. I also picked up the Dark Knight for $24.99 on sale.
CC had a bunch of Blu-Ray movies on sale for $17.99 too.
300, American Psycho, I am Legend and a bunch of other were among the $18 titles.
For under $500.00 you could get the player and a bunch of movies or a player and a surround sound system.

Blu Ray disc can be found with a bit of shopping very reasonably. If you can find a reasonably priced Blu Ray player, I'd not worry so much about the cost of the Blu Ray movies. There are several online stores that sell them well below SRP for most stores.
Even Walmart, Sam's and Costco often have them $5 to $10 less than most other stores.
I have found lots of older movies which I somtimes like better than new releases for $14.99 and Walmart had a bin full of them the other day for $9.99. Yes Blu Ray movies!
If this is for Christmas though, you are running out of time quickly!

I second the PS3. Bluray, games, internet, and chatting. Stores pictures and music too. If you want a bigger hard drive, yank out the one it came with and install a laptop hard drive in it. So much more versatile.
You may wait a long time. One of the promises of Blu-ray was that it would stop price erosion and boost the per-title profit for the studios. Wholesale prices are stabilizing around $25 for new releases, a full $7 more than DVD. You can find loss-leaders here and there, but the average Blu-ray price will be $7 above DVD for the foreseeable future.
We get our blu-ray movies from Netflix. Not into watching movies over-and-over again, so it's worked out well for us. Even with the $1 extra per month now for blu-ray's, we're very pleased with the service and selection.

It was phenominal on blu-ray...so much so that we found ourselves "rewinding" several times to re-view some scenes and accompanying audio. Highly recommended for those with 1080p HDTV's and great audio systems.

Can his TV display true 1080p? If not blue ray will be wasted. I've learned any TV under 42" can't display 1080p only 1080i.
First of all, any TV made in the last 2-3 years (i.e. any non-CRT) is 720p, not 1080i. 1080i was only seen on CRT based TV's and a couple old plasmas from Hitachi.
Second, Blu-ray is not wasted on a 720p TV, it looks great.
Remember when TV's were "HD READY" meaning that you had to get some sort of extra HD peice along with your HD box from the cable company?
My 32" is 720p & 1080i. Maybe waste was the wrong word but to take full advantage of Blue Ray 1080p is the move.

I wish I'd done more research before I bought mine but then again I would not have been able to afford that.
