OK inspired by Aarons thread. . . .

God comes down to earth and says"All rock guitars will sound the same till the endeth of days!" or something.

Who would you pick? Were talking about sonic gratification, not the best player (that one would cause fights.)

Two choices only. 1st place & 2nd.

My vote?

First: Billy Duffy - The Cult
Second: Steve Stevens - Bill Idol

I'm trying to think of someone a bit more off the beaten path, but I can't get past the fact that rock guitar tone never sounded better to me than when Van Halen plays "Beautiful Girls." Love that distorted tone.

My second choice might be Eric Johnson's sound on "Cliffs of Dover".

Aaah Eric Johnson, I have to dig those CD's out. Good stuff. I thought he was out gunned a bit in the G3, he's a lot more subtle than Joe + Steve.

Eddie Van Halen
Randy Roads
John Sykes

Eddie and the "brown sound." Nice choice.

To quote Jeff Beck from Guitar Shop:
A simulated cone filter
For steroizing or mono source
It's got a scaled down fret board
Feel of a Les Paul

Deep cut aways no pick guard
And a couple of chrome buckers
Full shred

Stiff neck brass nut and an ebony finger board
Ball's deluxe.

Just remember. This, is what all rock and roll will sound like forever.
If you can't picture Purple Haze sounding like the guitar in Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, pick somebody that sounds like they have a pair.

Lime? We're having a talk about that Paisley guy. . .

Great thread. Tough one too!

Alex Lifeson - I always loved that fat sound of his.
Yngwie Malmsteen

*Props to Eric Johnson and SRV

Alex has always been a hero to me. He doesn't get the credit he deserves. The big fat sound from Limelight is killer, but I even dig that bright thin sound he had on Big Money too. A guy has to be a bad ass to hang with Geddy and Neil.

I dug out Eric Johnson this morning. That was a good suggestion, I hadn't listened to that in way too long.

Killer list! You've got some heavy hitters in there for sure. (I had forgotten all about XYZ!)
Now the tough part. Pick #1 and #2. . . .

Allow me to also add Pete Townshend to the list. There's my two. SRV and Townshend.

I'd have to go with Eddie VH #1
and James Hetfield #2

for the way their sound impacted the history of rock music.

There's a sound right about 2:32 (in the studio version) into "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" that kicks ass.
