Good 14
Okay 9
Bad 17

Heard most of these last year (the following week's chart). Previous comments are here

40. RONI - BOBBY BROWN

Nina pronounced Roni wrong. It's supposed to be like "macaRONI". But she called it "Ronny". Bobby was not singing about his sweet, tender "Ronny".

31. IKO IKO - THE BELLE STARS

Just learned recently this was recorded in 1982 and was a minor UK hit. The group broke up in 1986. Then the song got used in Rain Man and became a huge hit here.

25. ORINOCO FLOW (SAIL AWAY) - ENYA

Mark Goodman complained about song titles with parentheses: "Just call it Orinoco Flow or Sail Away!". I disagree. I think this usually happens when the artist wants to name the song something that isn't the most memorable line and the label goes "You have to call it Sail Away" and the artist says "No, it is Orinoco Flow. Acknowledge my artistry." Then they compromise. That's what I've always assumed anyway. Or it can happen if a title is too long like "(You've Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" or "(Can't Live Without Your) Love And Affection". It gives people the option to just call it "Fight For Your Right" or "Love And Affection".

(76. Sheriff "When I'm With You)
(56. New Kids "I'll Be Loving You")
(47. Bette Midler "Wind Beneath My Wings")
14. THE LIVING YEARS - MIKE & THE MECHANICS
5. LIKE A PRAYER - MADONNA

I forgot about all of these in my pre-gaming.

4. SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY - FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS

My friend's son picked this one.

1. THE LOOK - ROXETTE

I picked this one yay! Don't know which one my friend's roommate went for.

#79 U2 "When Love Comes to Town"

This really surprises me! Last year, I didn't include this as a 'never reaches the top 40'. I must have assumed this song made the top 40 and not double checked. But it only peaked at #68 and that shocks me.

Won't reach the top 40
#51 Dino "24/7"
#52 Pasadenas "Tribute (Right On)"
#54 Carly Simon "Let The River Run"
#58 Steve Winwood "Hearts On Fire"
#61 Fixx "Driven Out"
#62 Simply Red "It's Only Love"
#63 Robbie Nevil "Somebody Like You"
#72 Duran Duran "Do You Believe In Shame?"
#73 Peter Schilling "The Different Story"
#74 New Edition "Can You Stand The Rain"
#75 Chris Rea "Working On It"
#77 Inner City "Good Life"
#79 U2 "When Love Comes to Town"
#80 Edie Brickell & New Bohemians "Circle"
#81 Escape Club "Walking Through Walls"
#85 Gina Go-Go "I Can't Face The Fact"
#86 Information Society "Repetition"
#87 Easterhouse "Come Out Fighting"
#88 Eighth Wonder "Baby Baby"
#89 Choirboys "Run To Paradise"
#90 Boy Meets Girl "Bring Down the Moon"
#91 Figures On A Beach "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"
#93 Replacements "I'll Be You"
#94 Melissa Etheridge "Similar Features"
#95 Traveling Wilburys "End Of The Line"

#61 Fixx "Driven Out"
I'm kinda surprised it made it this high. I love the song, but it wasn't quite mainstream.
#79 U2 "When Love Comes to Town"
I would have thought this would have been closer to 50 or so.
#80 Edie Brickell & New Bohemians "Circle"
I"m surprised it broke 100. I like it, but it's another one that wasn't mainstream.
#93 Replacements "I'll Be You"
#95 Traveling Wilburys "End Of The Line"
I really thought both of these would have broken 40.

Brackets are also used when the songs intended title may get confused with another song's title. Such as "Morning Train (Nine to Five)" by Sheena Easton. "Sail Away" is a well known Styx song.

Won't reach the top 40
#79 U2 "When Love Comes to Town"
#94 Melissa Etheridge "Similar Features"
#95 Traveling Wilburys "End Of The Line"

I find all 3 of these surprising. I heard all 3 of these songs heavily in Canada.

Similar Features only seemed to get a little air play down here, so I’m happy that it even charted. Water, Window, and Only One got the most rotation.

#95 Traveling Wilburys "End Of The Line"
Just posted about this in the "Can't believe it's not a top 40" thread. But here's a little more I just found about it.

"'Warner Bros. Records' International Department had asked that George Harrison come up with a B-side for This Is Love, a single from his Cloud Nine album. At the time it was customary to couple an A-side with a never-before-heard track, giving it extra sales value,' the Warner Bros. chairman emeritus wrote in the liner notes of 2007's The Traveling Wilburys Collection box set. "Cloud Nine was just out. George, along with cowriter Jeff Lynne and their friends Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison, had been hanging out in Dylan's studio. I suppose George figured that as long as his pals were on hand, why not use them to knock off this flipside?' Two days later, Harrison presented Ostin with Handle With Care, a song that combined the personalities of all five men in the room into a jangly slice of classic rock heaven that immediately won over both himself and A&R head Lenny Waronker."
Ron Hart (October 18, 2018 - Billboard)

I'm a bit lost on 1985. I think there's a ton of #1s from about Jan to Aug and I might have half of them listed below?

I'm sure I'm missing some stuff I didn't listen to back in the day.

Wild guessing on the order of these:

EARLIER
Phil/Phil "Easy Lover"
Madonna "Like A Virgin"
Wham "Careless Whisper"
Foreigner "I Want To Know What"
REO Speedwagon "Can't Fight This Feeling"

Madonna "Crazy For You"
USA For Africa "We Are The World"
Simple Minds "Don't You Forget About Me"

LATER
Tears For Fears "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"
Paul Young "Every Time You Go Away"
Duran Duran "A View To A Kill"
Huey Lewis & The News "The Power Of Love"
Phil Collins "Sussudio"
Bryan Adams "Heaven"
