Engelbert Humperdinck's first hit, Release Me, reached #4 in June 1967 – and it was not on the list. Don't ask me why. "Okay, why?" I told you to not ask me! Release Me was written by Eddie Miller and Robert Yount. It was a top-ten hit for Esther Phillips in late 1962. On the country chart, there were hit versions by Jimmy Heap, Ray Price and Kitty Wells, all in 1954; Charlie McCoy in 1973; and Marie Owens in 1974. The song has been recorded by more than 240 artists including Elvis Presley, Patti Page, Bobby Darin, Faron Young, Lefty Frizzell, Slim Whitman, Freddie Hart, Dottie West, Elton Britt, Cristy Lane, Dean Martin, Matt Monro, Bobby Bare, Willie Nelson, Johnny Rodriguez, Pat Boone, Eddy Arnold, Jim Nabors, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Conniff, Conway Twitty/Loretta Lynn, the Orlons, the Everly Brothers, the Statler Brothers and the Johnny Mann Singers.
