I was getting up, getting ready for another day of teaching our fine youth. The news was on, and I saw the second plane hit, and my jaw dropping. The day at school was shot, we just turned on the TV and watched. The other thing I remember was Air Force kids saying their parents were deploying and not being able to tell the kids where they were going or when they would be back.

I am surprised I haven't heard more about the big 1-0 anniversary, are they going to sell coins and T-shirts? I hope people would treat it more like a solemn occasion, a day to remember those who lost their lives and lost loved ones. And politicians to quit using it to scare people and push their agendas.

I just arrived at a client in North Carolina after hopping an on-time early morning flight that morning. Clear day, smooth flight, out on time, arrived a bit early. Turned out spending the week down there and just driving the rental car home instead of waiting for a rescheduled flight.

When calling the rental company to tell them that their car will end up around eight hours away, they said we will "pay big" if we didn't return it to the local airport. It turned out that we didn't "pay big" since many others did the same thing.

I remember another surreal experience a week or two after the attacks. As of 9/11/01 I was still taking lessons towards my pilots license. When the national airspace was shut down, student pilots remained grounded for several weeks. However, after a week or so airspace was again opened to general aviation so I went with a friend on a flight to Palm Springs (he was already a licensed pilot so wasn't affected by the fact that student pilots were still not allowed to fly). The FBO was deserted when we got to the airport and started checking out our plane. As we were doing the pre-flight we were interviewed by a local reporter and we ended up in the paper just because we were going to go flying. When we got to Palm Springs for our $100 Hamburger, it was also deserted. That was a weird feeling because that place is always busy. Walking through an empty airport was like being in some weird movie. The only people there were news crews interviewing the few of us that were there. We ate our lunch in a quiet airport then flew home. The whole experience was just odd. I'll never forget the empty airports and feeling like the only people in the sky.

Back to my being a student pilot at the time... The FBO where I was taking lessons was heavily used by students from the middle east, mostly Egyptians. They were probably 60-80% of the students pre-911. They'd stay here for a while and build up to their commercial license and then go back home. Sometimes their lack of English skills made things interesting with ATC, and they were notorious for being reckless/careless as student pilots. After flight training operations were once again allowed by the FAA, I never saw even ONE Egyptian student at the school. I finished my certificate and rented from them for a while but I never saw any more students from Egypt or the mid east.

From the CMA awards on November 7, 2001

"Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)"

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you in the yard with your wife and children
Or working on some stage in L.A.?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
Risin' against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?
Did you burst out in pride for the red, white and blue
And the heroes who died just doin' what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters?

[Chorus:]
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell
you the difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope and love are some good things He gave us
And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you teaching a class full of innocent children
Or driving down some cold interstate?
Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone?
Did you call up your mother and tell her you loved her?
Did you dust off that Bible at home?

Did you open your eyes, hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Or speak to some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Or go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watchin'
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns?

Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers
Did you stand in line and give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love?

[Repeat Chorus 2x]
And the greatest is love.
And the greatest is love.

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day?

Cool

not a country fan...do dig bluegrass, but i believe his heart was in the right place writing that song. even though i personally dont agree with the religious and gun message, i like the song. i think its very touching. and i give credit for that despite what dumb tv shows (that i find funny at times [south park/daily show etc.]) seemed to make it into. similar to dylan/young type nam songs in somewhat.

hope im not coming off standoffish here tx. he sings a message that lots of people are 100% on board with. im just saying im with his overall message.

great post/song...+1. really made me think.

Looking back, it's easy to forget the feeling of uncertainty that existed as it was happening. What was going to happen next? Were there more hijacked planes? Many buildings being evacuated and bomb scares.

It really changed us as a country.

I remember how horribly innacurate the media was that day. CNN was reporting lots of crazy shit that turned out to be not true. I know that real info was scarce that day, but they (and the others) are supposed to be a news organization, not a "rumor we heard from some guy that called in" organization. I think that contributed to the uncertainty. I also remember being pissed that our president and VP seemed to be running and hiding. It took Cheney like two years before coming out of his "undisclosed location". Not bashing Bush here as it was probably the Secret Service's call, but it still made me feel like our leader was hiding in a hole (a hole called Air Force One).

This anniversary just makes me feel pissed. Pissed at the terrorists, pissed at how we've wasted 10 years, and most of all pissed that Osama essentially won the battle. Look how he has affected our feelings of being secure, our loss of freedoms through government legislation, our daily lives in terms of being monitored/observed by the government and police, and how the resultant wars have helped to kill our economy. I was reading about all the security measures being built into the new One WTC building and it made me sad how locked down it is. And much like all of the stupid security theater that has been forced on us this past 10 years, NONE of the new security would have prevented what happened on 9-11-01.

So over here in London its been in the papers and on TV all week. There was a dude (le Dude) that had a French paper with a massive 911 article. Today, there was a church service on telly for the 65 Brit's that died. And there was a big collection of flowers and people at a firefighters statute outside St Paul's too. It was nice to see that more than just Americans care about it.
