Default XM Renewal

I got a mailer saying that my wife's XM subscription was set to renew.

I called customer service and asked for a discount and they gave me 12 months for $77. Not bad. 50% discount for a 5 minute phone call.

I just called today to cancel my quarterly sub + online listening. After turning down the 50% off 6 months or one year plan, they told me he'd give me 2 months free until I had the cash again, or I could decide to cancel then. Very cool, I know its not good to take advantage of their specials, but every time I call to cancel it is because I am between jobs and go a few months without a paycheck, so its legitimate, and they always offer a few free months. And of course, I do re-up when I have the money again, usually for 3 months at a time, sometimes yearly. I've been subbed since '05 and the customer service rep always mentions how he appreciated a 'long time sub' like myself, and throws me a bone. woohoo!

I don't think there's anything wrong with taking advantage of their specials. It's not like you are putting a gun to their heads. They can let you cancel. In this economy, it never hurts to ask. A lot of times they end up saying yes!

I've done the $77 for a year quite a few times now.

(And yes, I've also subbed at regular prices a few times as well. Honestly, though, if they want to give me a deal, i'll take it.)

The only thing that honks me off is that I have their "corporate relations" number which used to go to Nova Scotia. Now, it appears to go to God-only-knows-where in a land where the customer service reps can barely speak English and I really have to focus on what they're saying.

It's just first degree price discrimination. You aren't willing to pay the full price so you call and they give you a better price you are willing to pay. Those who ask get the discount, those who don't ask pay full price. It's quite common. In my opinion, keep calling and getting the discount as long as they're willing!

Sorry to say I disagree. I've asked a few times about discounted rates and have been told there are non. 10 years here, all full price. Not bitter at all-I love SXM.

Are you calling customer service or cancellations? There's certainly a difference in the response you get from either. Also, you have to call and say you want to cancel (which I will if I have to pay full price) to get the deal. Otherwise you won't get it.

I was actually responding to some of the people who were questioning if it was OK to call and get a better deal. I was explaining that it's price discrimination and it happens all the time - it's quite common for companies to do this.

I think when people say they can't get a deal they are usually calling for "a deal." You won't get anything that way. The point is they give you a deal to stop you from cancelling so you have to talk to cancellations and ask to cancel (I don't know if that's what you did or not).

I find they dont offer deals straight up if you ask, I always have to say Im cancelling and get to the part where I tell them my radio ESN and they review my info before they make hte final "Ok" to cancel. But hey, maybe I just got lucky.

I agree Grupsaar... from this and other forums my experience is that people are calling up customer service and asking for a deal. You won't succeed that way. You have to call cancellations and tell them you want to cancel. Then in that process you will be offered a deal to remain a customer. It's retentions - not a customer service deal or a loyalty deal.

Typically those who say they have no luck with it are not doing what I've outlined above. I haven't paid full price in quite a while (years) and I've been an XM customer since about 2003.
