Default Car Power Adapter, Ground is white/black wire?

Here's a really strange question, so bear with me. In a bone head move I snipped the car adapter without thinking where the step-down to 5V takes place. Now one of the guys in my works shop (we build panels, etc.) took it apart and rewired it for me. He said he wasn't sure which was which with regard to + or -. Said he found some documentation that referenced the black/white wire to be ground, so that's how he wired it. Can I get confirmation that he's right?

Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks,

Marty

On both the lighter end and the 5VDC plug the center ping is + while the outer shield is -. You can use a meter to determine which color wire is connected to the center pin.

Thanks VDCHawk. You couldn't see it but that jut flew over my head! Hopefully my friend in our shop will understand.

So what would you do, plug it into the lighter and then take a meter and put it against the center pin? Forgive the probably simple question, I've just never used meters, etc. before.

Where did you cut the wire. My adapter has zip-cord (2 side by side wires with joined insulation) and the wires are marked. One has the description text, the other has an alternating white stripe. As long as you connect stripe-to-stripe or text-to-text you should be ok.

Yeah, forgot to mention that part. Thinking I needed all of the necessary wire I could afford, I snipped it at the very base, leaving no wiring on the plug side.

Back to the meter thing if you can't identify the wires in the case.

Sounds like you wanted to hard wire it, look at the Sirius installation kit. Comes with a hardwire power adapter, FM direct relay, and some other junk.

Exactly, I wanted to hardwire it. The Stiletto car kit doesn't look like it comes with a hardwire kit, hence my bonehead problem. I'll go out and look again at all of the equipment, but I swear it doesn't come with a hardwire kit. My old Kenwood kit did, but its 12V, and obviously doesn't work with the Stiletto. Things would have been so much easier!

Sirius has a kit for installation, not part of your car kit. Part number is SIRPVK1. Check your local Circuit City or get one from TSS-RADIO.COM

Thanks VDC, I actually stumbled across that and that's my next step if I can't get the lighter working. I guess ideally what I would like would be to have this lighter adapter work, and then hardwire a female cigarette lighter adapter in, and hide it all behind the dash. I've already determined that my local circuit city has the SIRPVK1 in stock should I need it.
