Default Stiletto Device Recovery Procedure Details (updated 5/18/07)

First a BIG THANKS! to Nirvana for being the first to supply this information to the forum in the post Doggy screen of death.

In order to use the SIRIUS Recovery Device Program follow these steps:

(Please see the 5/18/07 Updated Note on the bottom of this post before starting this procedure!!!! )

1. First the unit must be COMPLETELY turned off. Not in sleep mode.

2. Before turning on, PRESS and HOLD the following Keys.
OPTIONS and DISPLAY

Now Turn on the Stiletto. You should see the following display.

3. Using the supplied USB cable that came with the Stiletto Connect your Stiletto to your PC.

The following screen should appear:

4. Select Recover Device

Once you select Recover, the following will be displayed on your Stiletto:

5. When the WARNING message appears on the screen, READ IT. You Will lose all your content!

Press - OK.

6. From here the unit will continue with the upgrade. It will download new firmware, Copy it to Device and install it. It takes about 15 minutes for the process.

Here are some of the displays you may see...

7. Finally, the Success screen is displayed.

You are prompted to close this screen. The stiletto will reboot as though it is powering on. Don't worry, the Dot Progression seems very slow the first time. But your Stiletto is as good as new!

The first time you plug in the radio, you get a warning about No Channels. I waited a minute, then the channels were available.

Notes:

Once started I could not stop the process. Removing the battery and replacing it only brought it back to the Error! screen.

It seems that this update is NOT the latest firmware. Go back to MSS and check to make sure you have the latest firmware. You can also just listen via WiFi and it will automatically update as well.

I plan to update this page as I find out more options. This will probably be the start of another PDF doc.

Updated 1-15-07 by MM--> I just did this procedure and I used the home dock synched up to my computer, instead of the USB cable. It worked perfectly.

Updated 5-18-07 by DAB --> Make sure your MSS software can connect to your Stiletto before attempting to do the Recovery Procedure. If your MSS can not find your Stiletto then the recovery procedure will fail and you'll basically have a bricked device. If you have more than one computer you could try installing the MSS and checking to see if that computer will see your Stiletto. It is my opinion that often times these issues are computer related more than MSS or Stiletto related. AGAIN YOUR MSS and STILETTO MUST BE ABLE TO CONNECT TO EACH OTHER PRIOR TO ATTEMPTING THE RECOVERY PROCEDURE!

Why would I go through this procedure? I guess the simple answer is so hopefully you won't have to. You really should not have to, but we have seen two instances where the stiletto's freeze up upon startup leaving the users radio unusable.

If this procedure can save a return or get the unit back up working again, It's nice to know how to reset it.

Now I know what you are talking about Rubin. I went ahead and deleted my question since I had the answer when I read those threads.

Mike you ole SIRIUS Road Dawg... Good Job! This is great info and I think Nivarna is right in his thread, this pretty much means the Stiletto can indeed be reset with all the struture totally rebuilt so that the unit is just like you got it out of the box.

I hope not many folks have to use this, but it is worth knowing should we need too.

Sticky applied!

I've gotten the "!error" screen twice in the last month. Both times it occurred after switching fron the slim to the larger battery. I did all of the above steps to recover EXCEPT holding down the two buttons and it worked for me.

I would expect if the system thinks it's corrupted in some way it would start out by showing the ! Error screen.

If you need to force it to the screen you would press those buttons while booting from a cold restart.

Smile I successfully completed recovery procedure.

I had to perform this total recovery reset procedure Friday afternoon after my Stiletto froze hard and would not turn back on no matter what I did. I was downloading mp3s and wma files from my hard drive to my stiletto when it just froze midway through the download. So after trying complete shut down and restart several times and replacing battery I decided to try the recovery procedure and it went well just as it was laid out in this thread. Thanks.

FYI, when completed, I noticed the verion of software was the same as when I bought it, the recovery process does not download the latest version mentioned in another sticky. So I downloaded the newest version once I was certain the Stilletto was working as good as new and now I am rebuilding my playlist and other settings.

I believe this would only happen if your PC was not connected to the internet.

Thanks for sharing. I was talking to Sirius Tech Support (more than once). Last night they said that I might have to do a system recovery. They are working on getting me an answer as to why my router will not allow me to use wi-fi (my first stilleto wouldn't either. I am also unable to update my firmware at all.

I had to reset mine after a hard freeze, but the recovery process failed! It went through the 15 minute recovery as described above, but the final screen said "Sorry, we were unable to recover your device."

I'm repeating the process to see where it goes... anyone else had a failure yet?

Well, it's dead. I'm calling it. 8 tries, failed each time. Thankfully, I got that Best Buy 4-year warranty. Guess I'm on my way to BB today...

LOL! Yeah, it was something more scatological, actually... complete with steam and aroma trails.

BB hooked me up with no trouble at all... very convenient.

I'm back up and running!
