Default NFL Realignment

I know that we went through this a few years ago, so I do not think that this is possible. But I have always thought that the NFL would be better served by having teams set for regional rivalries.

I know that some owners would oppose what I think makes most sense, and I wondered what you all think?

Makes sense logistically? Yeah it makes too much sense. Makes sense financially? No. Will it ever happen? No.

I am also a Dallas fan and can only give a biased perspective as such. Take the NFC East for example. There is no way the NFL will realign this division any further. Think of all the Dallas rivalries within the division. When the last realignment occured and Arizona was moved, the Cardinals did so unwillingly. Their is no way the NFL will get rid of all the rivalries within this division. The same applies to all of the other divisions. When realignment does occur, it is always at the expense of the smaller market teams.

It makes a lot of sense from a geographical standpoint, but I think it's not a good idea to force rivalries at the expense of current ones.

The Cowboys and Redskins are a great, longstanding rivalry. How many years would it take for the Redskins and Panthers to develop the same kind of animosity?

I've seen it first hand in the SEC West. Alabama has Auburn as a natural rival. Ole Miss has Mississippi State. When Arkansas joined the SEC, the conference did everything to make LSU - Arkansas a rivalry game, including playing the final game of the season, on a nationally televised Friday game every year. Still, after 15 years, they remain just another team on the schedule. It's difficult to force rivalries.

Just my opinion.

I can almost agree with your realignment, but seeing the N.Y. Giants moving from the NFC to the AFC. I would never like to see that happen. I can agree with most of the other divisions. I like the part of all the Florida teams together and the Texas teams, along with New Orleans and Tennessee together.

But a new NFL realignment probably won't happen, if the NFL can expand to couple of more cities. Like Los Angeles getting a team back and I think San Antonio could support a team?

As a Dallas fan I would miss the Cowboys - Indians game, and Jerry Jones would never go for it.

I would see these develop as rivalries:

Pats - Giants

Steelers - Colts

Cowboys - Texans

All the Florida Teams

Why did you move SF into the AFC? Why not make your new AFC West the new NFC West. The 49ers have 5 SB rings without a loss, you're taking two legendary AFC teams(Broncos, Chiefs)and putting them in the NFC. And the Rams, a team that moved out of the West and the expansion Phoenix team gets to stay? The 49er/Cowboy winning tradition and rivalry would be lost so that the Cardinals could stay in the NFC?

You can't move the one team that has yet to lose a Super Bowl in its own conference. The 49ers OWN the NFC West...move Seattle, Oakland and San Diego to the NFC.

Tsk, tsk....

It wouldn't bother me to swap NFC West for AFC West, I would want to keep the CA teams with Seattle.

I've often thought if the NFL expands again we should include at least one Canadian team in there. Think about it, Canada has at least one team in every other major sport, MLB, the NBA, and the NHL, but none in the NFL. Now that would definitely skewer TX's re-alignment plan, but it would be good for Canadian interest, as well as us. I would suggest Toronto as an expansion market.

Yea the 49ers are 5-0 in the Super Bowl, but they haven't even appeared in it, in over 10 years. The expansion Phoenix team, the Cardinals have been living in Phoenix for about 20 years now. To be really being honest, the Cardinals you can move them to the toilet. Phoenix wouldn't really care were they move!

You got the CFL up there, if the NFL had to expand. I would probably have to say:

Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Antonio, Orlando or maybe even Mexico City?

My point being that you don't eff with a franchise that shares the over all lead in Super Bowl victories and that has the best winning percentage in the Super Bowl for any team that has been there at least twice.

Phoenix...feh....Fehnix.
St. Louis...who cares? They're not even in the West.

Don't eff with tradition.

I like the divisions the way they are. Moving teams in and out of conferences doesn't fly well with most folks. There's still too much loyalty to the old-AFL/NFL days. I know that was 40 years ago, but those old rivalries run deep. They moved the Seahawks, but...who cares?

I can't imagine Dallas and Washington not being in the same division. The NFC and AFC East are both two of the most intense, rivalry-filled divisions in all of sports. Same with the AL and NL East. All those big cities, all those people, and all those teams so close together, with a few kickers like Dallas or the Florida teams thrown in for fun.

Good topic for debate, though, TXWJ.

I don't know about Mexico City, maybe. But I would wonder about Orlando even more, Florida already has 3 NFL Teams, Miami, Jacksonville, and Tampa Bay. That would make 4, the most of any State by far. I would award it to another State that doesn't even have 1 NFL team, like Nevada as per your example.

4 in Florida would be the most in any state by one, not by far. California and New York each have 3 teams, and California should have 4 (with a team in LA). But I'm not in favor of a fourth Florida team.

The balance of 32 teams is nice. It works very well with teams per division, teams you are scheduled to play, etc.

I would (eventually) move the Bills to Toronto, the Vikings to LA, the Saints to Mexico City and the Jaguars to London. Or something along those lines.

I would also make it so the bye week for every team is week 7, 8, 9 or 10 (8 teams off each of those weeks). Week 3 byes are ridiculous.
