Default S50 Firmware Update 1.3.15 NOW AVAILABLE!!!

*UPDATE* @ 11:45 PM 3/30/06[/b]

V1.3.15 is the latest application code and intended to be released tonight in conjunction with the new car dock and device firmware V0.5.54.

Apparently the link for the v1.3.15 was not pulled, their server experienced a server update error and some of the links were not updated, so it is currently not available, but will be back up in the morning. (It is being reported by subscribers that the update is now available again as of 11 AM this morning 3/31/06)

It was also suggested that those of you that are having issues with the car docks need to attempt to download all the files again tomorrow when the link is back up. There may have been some file mismatch or corruption due to the server update error.

Here are the top 3 things that were addressed in this update. By the way SIRIUS will have an information page on their web site soon.

Persistent mode - unit will stay in preset, browse by genre or channel mode after power cycle.

Schedule recording - we corrected the problem with the 5 min. gap for back to back schedule recording.

Firmware update - this is for the baseband chipset update (step 3) and it was actually the biggest task they did from January to now.

Then general stability of the unit, reduce lockups, PSRAM errors, etc., which some of us have already confirmed.

The bottom line here is that this team has been working hard to support and provide stability to the S50. Hopefully as we move forward we will see some functionality changes.

The one thing that I want to stress is that I did not get the feeling that SIRIUS was planning to drop support for the S50, so lets put that ugly rumor to bed. I did get the feeling they have worked their butts off to provide this update.

This update is more about addressing stability issues. I know this will disappoint some of you, but lets give this firmware update a chance and move forward from here.

Here's what I've observed...

Back to back recordings DO work using the wake-up feature of the home dock. (This one is a BIGGIE!!!)

When portable, I hit pause, and it took a longer amount of time (several minutes) before it automatically shutdown, but it DOES still shutdown.

Unit does not remember where it was when it shutdown.

FF speeds seem about the same, but RW seems faster than before (its about the same speed as FF, where it was quite a bit slower before)

Recordings STILL play OUT-OF-ORDER.

When deleting content, still doesn't show date or time.

I'm not going to list all of the things that DIDN'T get fixed, because it has already been stated that this is mainly a STABILITY update.

I find it funny that the update showed up the same day that many people on this forum started their "Howard 100 News" e-mail campaign!!!

Thanks for your observations. I too just tried the back to back recording with excellent results. No shut downs, no lock-ups and the home dock did indeed wake up and record as it should have and continued to record with no time between recordings necessary.

On the speculation about people writing Howard or the Orbitcast Report, the real deal is that if this update wasn't ready they simply coudln't have rolled out it not matter what. So, I am not sure this is pressure as much as the update simply was now ready to roll out. We could argue and speculate on this from now to eternity, but the bottom line is that we now have an update. No it won't fix everything everyone wants fixed, but from what I can tell they did a good job bringing stability to the S50 itself and that is what many of us wanted more than anything else.

Be glad you were not here. A few people were causalities of the upgrades. Their Car Docks turned into "Bricks"

The good news, my home dock powered up on its own this morning and So far it's still working (not locked up)

I'm just wondering if I need to downgrade before I upgrade again.

Did this xml information come from the firmware and System Update Files?
http://www.sirius.com/s50swupdate .

Anyone know if this was the source of the information posted? That file now has the old information and I was wondering if there was a new xml file that might be version specific?

Thanks,

Mike

At the moment I appear to be one of those people. I suppose I get to look forward to sitting on hold to customer support for 3 hours today. This sucks!

I believe I've tried everything. I've done the folowing with NO luck

1) Upgraded to 1.3 and updated car dock. It broke.
2) Put ROM's back into ROOT directory and reseated in car dock. No luck.
3) Downgraded back to 1.2. Still no luck with car dock.
4) Removed last ROM file in ROOT directory. Car dock still dead.

A brick is a VERY ACCURATE representation of my car dock. I sure hope there is a 3 finger salute for this thing.

Anyone know anything further on how to fix this problem?

I guess I was one of the semi lucky ones. I had to do the firmwear update twice becaseu the first time the unit froze but after a battery removal I reconnected to MSS and all is well with the unit and the car dock.

I can say that the S50 does seem to start faster than before and it will go from channel to channel significantly faster. The fact that it remembers which channel mode you were was nice--when I got in the car this morning it was still in preset mode.

An update to increase features will be great but if this is the best they can do for now, I'm cool with that as all seems well with the S50 for now.

Well I can say that they've definitely fixed some of my stability issues. There was a point where I couldn't leave my S50 playing overnight in "Mute" mode or it would be locked in the morning when I got into the office (for the record, I work at home, so office is a bit of a misnomer). Anyway, updated last night, threw it on mute before going to bed, and just unmuted this morning. No lockups. So far, so good.

Me too. I thought I might of had an issue with my car dock because last night it kept counting % everytime I turned it on ( 3 times) But this morning it came on fast and no issues. Maybe plugging it back into the home dock after cleaned things up.

Well Hopefully those guys who bricked their car docks will be ok with what will be released later this morning. Maybe there is some 3 finger reset for it as well.

Later,

Mike

Called customer support this morning due to bricked car dock. Apparently the only way to fix the problem is through warranty replacement. At the moment the backorder for the S50's is 4-6 weeks. This really really sucks. Guess I'll have to move my 2nd homedock into my car along with power converter.

I put my S50 in my homedock this morning at work. When I go back to my car I'm hoping that MAYBE it will decide to work.

BTW, customer service says the firmware update to the car dock causes a chip to blow. I'm having a hard time believing this but, then again, I don't have a working car dock either.

Dave:

I know it sucks, but you could buy another car dock. Circuit City has them instock online. See if maybe The warranty department would cover the cost or something.

It sucks but it would be a much quicker option.

Just wondering in what sense it doesn't work? I need to know whether or not to send it back, but my car dock comes on, I just can't get any channels. Initially it stalls at the dog logo when docked on the cardock, but if I press setup and then back it goes to channel 184, no audio though, and no other channels available. Tried resetting channels but there seems to be no signal from the satellite, so I'm wondering if this is what everyone else who had a bad go at the firmware update is experiencing?

I updated pretty early last night, probably shortly after 9:00. I had to update MSS (actually I deleted the old MSS and ran a full install) on my laptop, since I was still running the old version.

After getting the updated MSS, I ran the update to 1.3. It went alright, except that the instructions indicate that the S50 should shut down after it updates the car dock after step 3. My S50 had turned itself to channel 184 and did not shut off. So after waiting at least 20 mins., I turned the S50 off and pulled it out of the car dock. I then turned it on and off and then put it back in the car dock. At that point, the S50 went through another update (I think it was a channel update). After that update, it did not turn off.

In any event, I left it in the car dock all night (turned on) as I usually do. It taped Howard 100 this morning from 6 to 7. Actually, it is set to record from 6 to 7, but it stops 6 seconds early. It then recorded from 7 to 8. Those are all the preset recordings that I have, so my car dock seems to still be working fine.

Not sure if this information helps anyone out with their car docks. It is disappointing to hear people having more problems.

It is true that software can cause a chip to blow. One of the reasons the PC as the internal speaker was for this very reason. In the days of monochrome adapters and CGA adaptapters (Pre-vga) you could set the dip switches wrong on the PC motherboard and cause the color graphics adapter chip to blow if it thought it was in monochrome mode. It gives you Beeps to warn you of this issue.
