Writing this post isn't easy. I haven't been involved heavily in SIRIUS Backstage since RyanM bought the site, but I still remained active as the only "founding father" on the team, helping mainly with graphic design and some moderating. Jeff Hinson (TulaneJeff) worked his ass off for a number of years to build this community, which ultimately became the best online community around. Starting with TulaneJeff, BuggyBoy, and myself, and then ultimately with the help of DAB, Manco, RoadRunner, BenDee, RyanM, Jeremy, DaJoker and MM, we built something that transcended satellite radio...we built a community of people who connected on a very personal level with each other, and shared part of their lives with the community. Never was this so abundantly clear than when TulaneJeff went through the horrors of Hurricane Katrina, or I personally experienced cancer.
For me, the graphic design aspect was a fun hobby which helped to build our brand, and ultimately our community. It all started as a labor of love for satellite radio...even when I was upset at SIRIUS for getting rid of I-90 (their one-time 90's channel). Despite my disappointment (which I made abundantly clear on ClubXM), I offered Jeff an idea for a new logo and design for the newly established SIRIUS Backstage, since I wanted to see Backstage succeed as an online forum for fans to express their views. That was November of 2002, a start of something truly wonderful for me. I am proud of my accomplishments on this site, and some of the ideas I brought to the table. I'm most proud of being part of bringing a great team on board.
There were some bumps in the road, and some decisions made which were somewhat regrettable. My efforts at creating SIRIUS Nation especially backfired on me. Most disappointing for us though was how SIRIUS hindered our efforts on many occasions, when we provided such a valuable tool of marketing and feedback (at no cost) for them to take advantage of.
Unfortunately, RyanM has seemed to abandoned the site, and technical difficulties have rendered the site too difficult to use. There are many items which have been neglected for too long, despite the CONTINUED hard work of MM, DAB, and RoadRunner to do everything they could to rectify the situation. It all came down to the new owner who chose to ignore us all, and reverse all the hard work and efforts that TulaneJeff and others put into this site.
Therefore, I regretfully announce my resignation as Graphic Designer and Moderator of SIRIUS Backstage. It has been a truly life-changing experience for me, and I hate to see it end like this.
I will be participating in
DigitalRadioCentral.com more frequently, and I have confidence that MM, DAB, TSS-Taylor, and the team they bring on will do a fantastic job in rebuilding this satellite community once again, while building on the post-merger world with discussions about all technologies. I hope to see you all over there once again.
If this is the end of SIRIUS Backstage, it has been been a great run. Thank you all!
