Default Works 1 year after canceling

I have an old portable PnP sirius unit. Was suprised when I plugged it in the other day that it still works perfectly. Canceled my subscription over a year ago. Assume eventually it will stop working? Maybe next time it does an update or something?

Wow, you thief, you criminal, you are so totally unethical and you should burn in a devil's hell! You have absolutely no shame about stealing the service. Uh Damn! I was beginning to believe what I was typing... but nah I am just kidding with you!

It is amazing that these folks can't figure out how to deactivate a tuner after one cancels and it doesn't get the initial deactivation signal. I have a couple of tuners like that and I periodically fire them up just to see. I've left them on for weeks at a time expecting they'd get shut off. NOPE!

I have had a unsubscribed sirius radio turned on for several months and they have not hit it yet, I had an XM radio in the same test but I withdrew it after the transformer began to smoke.

They should be using some kind of leased authorization system where rather than turning off unsubscribed radios they would reauthorize subscribed radios over and over and if a radio didn't get reauthorized it would shut itself off at a given point.

So even if the radio were turned off for a year when it pulls down the date from the satellite when next powered on it would immediately deactivate.

We use a similar technique with a device that is highly prone to theft, if the device can't check-in it goes into lock-down and can only be recovered by another hit, an authorization code from tech support or a factory firmware flash, to restore a bricked device without our help you would need to solder down a new BGA flash chip, which requires a $6000 rework station and JTAG the factory firmware. Which we like to believe is beyond the capabilities or means of the theives.

Yeah but if they can’t even get their system to correctly and timely disconnect their radios you think they could pull that off without it cutting off legitimate radios that should stay activated?

I just sold a radio on ebay. It was a stratus I used to have it still worked I called Sirius multiple times to have them send a deactivation signal to it as I was going to sell it (really shouldn’t have been that hard) but they kept telling me there was no way to do that and that I should just enjoy that it has free service. Sold it to some guy basically saying it could be deactivated completely at any moment, then the update came out I bet it got deactivated then. If it did not I would be surprised.

No, the update was a channel mapping update, that has nothing whatsoever to do with activation or deactivation. So, no he is probably still using it with no subscription.

Just like the previous poster said, once they remove your radio from the system, they have no ability to send another deactivation signal. I've gone through this with support, supervisors... When they initially send out the deactivation signal it will send it periodically for 72 hours. After that, chances are it won't ever get turned off. I've got multiple tuners that have been on for years with no subscription. I don't use them because I have a SL2 that I use. But I turn them on occasionally and have left them on for days and weeks thinking they would get turned off. NOPE! I did the update on them today and YEP they are still receiving the service. LOL

Didn’t I read something on here though that said that they did a huge deactivation signal for like a week or more months back?

Also not denying what your saying but wouldn’t the system say wait a second and deny the receiver from getting the channel mapping update since it’s not “technically” in the system?

I know when I have activated all 3 of my radios on my account they have to be activated before they get a channel update. I dunno I assumed that the system would have some sort of catch there but then again the thing still worked though I got rid of it in April when I switched tuners so yeah……

I see where a couple of people claimed their tuner was deactivated, but when you get down to brass tacks most of them had recently deactivated and it was within the 72 window that I referred to in my previous message. There was no mass deactivation that took place to my knowledge. It certainly didn't impact none of my tuners and I know dozens of folks have continued to report their tuners are still working too. So, that just isn't true.

Sirius's system does not do a look up to see if your tuner ID is activated before doing a download for the channel mapping so you are mistaken about that. If that was the case why did these 3 tuners that I have here that clearly do not have an active subscription get updated? Even tuners that are deactivated can still have the channel mapping info updated.

If you buy a brand new tuner and take it out of the box and plug it in. Immediately it will update if there is an update available, so NO you do not have to call and activate the tuner prior to that happening. I think you are confused about that. I've been doing this for many years and I know how it works verbatim.

I just realized you were right, I was thinking that I got it after it was activated but after I think back it was before.

I have a Sportster 4 I deactivated last year in September. I took it out of the box this week and it still works. I've had it on for about a week and a half and it still works... Will it ever deactivate?

Maybe...

Have you checked your account to see if they really did take that radio off your account?...

Have you contacted Sirius and reported it like DAB did with his receivers?

That might not go very far. I personally made 6 calls to them on the 6th one they told me they know their radios tend to stay active and not to worry I was getting “lucky” and could have the service on it as long as their sats allowed it to stay on.
