As they say, perception is everything and Howard is a very, "do as I say and not as I do" kind of guy.

Jackie was just dumb and he didn't go onto bigger and better things, so he is much easier to "forgive".... at least in Howard's world. Howard comes off as not being the jealous type... and sometimes he might actually believe it... but it's just not true. I can even hear the sound of the green eyed monster behind his voice when talking to Artie about all of the stuff he has going on. Artie is just very good at reading that and properly inserting "it's because of this show", into the conversation ten to thirty times.
Dude, you nailed it. Especially the Artie part. Howard knows that if Artie goes he's totally fucked.

I love Artie to death, he's my favorite part of the show, but Howard was around before Artie, and he would survive without Artie if that ever came about.

Yeah, the show "survived" without Jackie and Billy but it wasn't nearly as good. Where Howard is now is the closest he's been to reclaiming his salad days(with egg white) and a large part of that is the emergence of Artie on satellite. Howard's last year on KROCK, especially the last three to four months was more like life support. Of the 23,000 hours of tapes, I hope those are the lowest priority to be played, those last four months were pretty hard to stuff to listen to.

If Artie left the show, Howard would have to find a replacement. It's too late in the game for everyone involved to gather a new chemistry with another comic. Right now Artie is Howard's 'King' piece, he better not leave it exposed and vulnerable, he better think 12 moves ahead.

Jackie Martling was the best writer Howard ever had. Nothing has come close since.

I firmly agree. The true linchpin is Robin Quivers.

And anyone can disagree all they want. Cause they're wrong!

Thanks for all the great responses. I like Artie being on the show but I never listened much to the last days of the terrestial era.

I recall that John did attempt to tell Howard before the news came out but could not get a meeting with him. It was definitely time for him to go. Whenever Howard got pissed off at John, he would tell him that he was a glorified intern and that he could be replaced at any time. Howard could have paid John whatever if he took a little chunk out of his huge salary. But he really did not have a position for him justifying a huge salary. John is no Artie nor a Jackie. In my opinion, his job came to be tattling to Howard about the other people on the staff. No... it was time for him to go and the job he got was a huge promotion. Wouldn't have mattered if Jay Leno had talked to Howard in advance. Howard would still have been pissed off. In my opinion, he should have been happy for John. Howard's rants against Jay Leno (he even spectulated that Jay must be cheating on his wife on the road because it would be impossible to be so faithful) showed his dark, vindictive side.

I agree with everything you said... and still think John is a talentless douchebag. He had to take this job and for Howard not to be elated for the guy says a lot. God help he who aspires to be as big as or bigger than Howard.

I think part of the issue is WHY Jay wanted John. IMO, he wanted to steal a part of the show in the hopes that it would make HS fans tune in. The stupid part was that they hardly use him for anything and quickly distanced themselves from his HS show persona in an attempt to act like he wasn't trying to steal a part of the show. So it backfired on them and I think that was the reason Howard made a thing out of it so it would sour the plan...

A few more moves like that and Jay may beat out John Edwards for B.D.I.U.

Since he is free to do what he wants, I hear far less complaining and he actually puts on a GREAT show, I love it!

Anyway my question. I was listening the other day and heard them talk about Stuttering John and Jackie The Joke Man. What happened here? There's some real bad blood there. Is the problem with John because he left for the TOnight Show?

Please just let me know what happened. DOnt post if you're only going to say "He's a dick" or something like that. I'm curious to know what started this.
yeah everyone summed up what happened pretty much. stuttering john was offered much much more money to do much less work for jay leno. which was kinda done sneakily by jay leno. but howard has also mentioned that they wouldn't have been able to pay john close to what he's getting from the tonight show, so no one can really blame him for leaving. stuttering john was a user of people to get where he wants, but to me, he's no different than ralphy cakes. he's actually less annoying than ralphy and more talented, but that doesn't say much.

As for jackie, he just kept making outrageous monetary demands, and eventually cbs/infinity had enough and they weren't gonna pay him all the money he wants. whats strange is that they don't dislike jackie at all. robin invited him to her party, and gary has invited him on the show many times. howard had dinner with him since they've been at sirius and they get along fine. but for some reason, jackie will not do the sirius show. and suprisingly he did the krock show finally in december for the first time since he left. I agree with the others that artie is definitely an upgrade over jackie, in the end the audience won there. another thing, is I think jackie would not humble himself (in his opinion) to sitting in the chair where george takei or rev bob levy sit in when they visit. but he has no problem going on the rawdog channel for some reason for free.

For what it's worth, I read that Jay only took a real liking to John when he saw John on that celebrity reality show (I forgot the name of it). Jay thought John was very likable and related well to the American public.

You really didn't miss much. I have to agree with packie juppet about the last few months at WXRK. I really enjoyed the shows at the time, but after having the show on Sirius for over 6 months now, you can really tell the difference. I recently dumped some of the last WXRK shows on my Ipod and found myself zipping through them. They are so much more energized now and it really shows.

But the Stern show operating on 4 cylinders is still far above anything else running on all 8...
