Default Satellite Locations.....

Does anyone know where the Sirius Satellites are located in the sky? Also, does anyone know what the satellite names are. This web site http://scisites.msfc.nasa.gov/realti.../JTrack3D.html tracks satellites and other space craft and I couldnt find the Sirius satellites listed so I figure they use a different name.

Thanks.

Don

Sirius satellites aren’t in a stationary orbit like XM or Directv. Sirius elected for an in motion orbit which basically does a large figure 8 over north and south America. The crossover of the figure 8 is somewhere around Iowa and the upper loop goes well into the north of Canada before falling south. This pattern basically means they always have a satellite App Iowa or north. However I don’t have the .gif file which shows the oribit. I believe the name of Sirius satellites are Sirius 1, Sirius 2 and Sirius 3.

Here's the little .gif file someone made up.. It shows the apparent motion of the satellites caused by the combination of the earth's rotation and the tilted/elliptical orbits of the satellites...

Note that there are only two satellites north of the equator at any given time.. These are the only two that are used. The one that's south of the equator is turned off. The southbound satellite is turned off at the exact same time the northbound one is turned on..... (Note the equator crossings take place simultaneously).

If you look, you can see the two XM satellites as well.. They remain stationary in the sky.

P.S. This page has tracking info on the Sirius satellites..

The thing that confuses me is... If that animated diagram is correct, why would Sirius suggest N - NW as the Optimal antenna aiming direction for the Southwest region? (Phoenix, AZ)

Seems like I would want to point East - North East.

According to this guide, North East would be right.

What that map doesn't show is if and when the sats start and stop transmitting.

Here's a site that gives you the current position of satellites. Just do a search for Sirius-1, Sirius-2 and Sirius-3 and you should get them.

Do search and download ORBITRON
It's one of the easiest sat trackers.

It's got them listed under geostationary (why?). The data orbitron has for these sats seems to be wrong. It has 2, 3 listed and the location for them is off the cost of africa.

You have the wrong satellites. Under the TLE click on
"Other Comm"
The sats you have are another Sirius (no relation to the USA) out of Europe.

Are you refering to SES Global as the "other" sirius? If so, SES is not in the Radio business...They are Satellite Operators....

I'd assume they Do stop transmitting when not over N America. Besides not wasting power, they need to pick up the feed signal broadcast from somplace in the us (NY iirc).

They hand off at or near the equator....

If you follow them, you'll see one passes south over the equator at the same time another one is crossing north.. The handoff takes place here..

The northbound satellite gets turned on and the southbound bird gets shut off for its loop around the south tip of South America..

Because of the way Sirus works, you can only have two satellites transmitting at the same time..
