Edwards’ new program will be distributed through the XM Satellite Radio system, a fee-based, commercial-free digital provider, NPR reported Wednesday.
Surely if it's on a talk channel it won't be commercial-free.

Well, you see, you pay for the programming, but you get the commercials for free!

Dang it! I saw satellite radio in the headline, got my hopes up, clicked on the link and saw he was going to "Brand X." Dang it!

He got sooo screwed by NPR. I heard his last day, you could tell he was *not* happy about the whole situation.

Good for him, glad to see him still in radio.

It will be on a new channel (133), which is rumored to by XMPR, or XM Public Radio.

Interesting to see if this means NPR on XM, or if XM is actually developing their own Public Radio channel...

I don't think it will be NPR on XM. The fact is that XM has gotten NPR's top hat and they plan to build their own programming around him. It was a smart move. SIRIUS clearly has a lock on NPR right now, but if XM does a morning edition type show it will garner a lot of listenership fairly quickly due to the credibility and the fact that Bob Edwards is so popular with the NPR listeners.

I think the comment that XM is a fee based commerical free digital provider is a general description of XM and does not mean this talk program will necessarily be commerical free.

The "commercial-free" statement in the article was just bad reporting. I don't think it was meant to suggest that the show would be commercial free. Of course, to the uneducated reader (i.e. the readers stuck in FM world), it might be misleading.

But at the same time, you will piss off many listeners in the NPR when you insert 5 or more commercial minutes per hour into the show, especially when it is only one hour long.

Default ...how did we lose him?

When Bob first left Morning Edition I though he'd show up soon on Sirius...I was sad to hear this news. As an avid Morning Edition/All things considered listener... these are, in my view, the one major gap in Sirius' otherwise excellent programming.

Probably helps that Edwards lives in the D.C. area. XM headquarters are only a couple of miles from his old office at NPR. He didn't move very far.

And now Bob can start dropping all those f-bombs he's always wanted to.

"It's 11 minutes past the hour, and you won't believe this s---!"

Interpreter,

It says here http://www.xmradio.com/publicradio/

that the station is commerical free? Why do you say that there are 5 minutes of commericals an hour?

Looks a pretty darn good line up if you ask me. Probably as good if not better than NPR itself.

It does look like a great lineup... This American Life, Studio 360...

Is Sirius limited in it's content because of the "conflict of interest" between NPR's local stations and broadcasting on Sirius... I guess this is why Sirius didn't also get M.E. and ATC?

Both on 108 already. Except for the Bob Edwards show is there any reason Sirius isn't already carrying all these programs? Any reason they can't start? It's not like their 3 NPR channels aren't filled with repeats...
