Yes, there are bad teachers and there always have been. However, if you have a good support system at home then the family can account for the bad teacher and can overcome the teachers' shortcomings. Yes that takes some work on the families' part but I've seen first hand that a good parent can pick up the slack for a bad teacher.
Maybe you don't know how bad a teacher can be. I'm not talking about a teacher that simply doesn't know how to teach math or english. I'm talking about a teacher that can destroy a kids motivation and future. I'm talking about abusive teachers, ones that may not hurt physically but do psychologically. We had such a teacher, and we as parents couldn't resolve it without escalating it to the super intendent of schools since the principal wouldn't let us switch him to a different teacher. Even the Superintendent deferred back to the principle. Eventually he relented and our son was moved. I know other parents that weren't bad parents, but the "system" can intimidate and defeat even good parents.

The teacher was eventually transferred to another school and promoted to Vice Principal in since she was abusing the children and they couldn't fire her. Unfortunately the school she was transferred to was one that all the kids that she taught had to go to for middle school.

I'm all for that. I have a parent teacher conference this afternoon with a bad one. I'll do what I can to get her fired, or at least warn prospective customers away from her.

It's something a logical bastard would find compatible with his or her worldview.

You know, I don't claim to be the best or hardest-working person out there, but I make a pretty good effort. I don't think people should be entitled to a job.

I ran across a college professor the other day who is taking an 18-month sabbatical. 18 months to get paid to do nothing.

The average German works 1,000 hours less a year than the average South Korean. That's 20 hours a week. That probably means the average German works 30 hours a week (and expects the government to pay for everything, and US troops to protect them from the Soviets/Russians) and the South Koreans 50.

Farking A. Work an honest week and try to take care of yourself all you can. Jeez.

Why you harshin' Germans' buzz? I love my work, but most people don't. The goal should be as little work as possible. We should be copying Germany, not South Korea.

I had one of those and told my parents about it. My father went into school that evening (open house) and threatened his life (got a bit physical too) and it stopped for all students. That teacher was physically abusive. The last straw was him picking me out of my chair by the back of my neck (squeezed my neck and lifted me straight up using only his power). We had another teachers that was psychologically abusive. She was fresh out of college which seemed odd (odd that she was that abusive right out of college). Thankfully the students were able to stand up, go to the administration, and made her quit (we made her life a living hell both at school and her home until she stopped coming to work). That backlash, by the students, started when she made the nicest girl cry saying that she was a waste of life, wasn't' worth the plastic on the chair on which she was sitting, and that her parents should have used birth control. That was the last straw after the entire class taking abuse for 3/4s of the year.

I'm not saying that will work in all instances. I only brought it up to show you that I do know of the extremes.

The rest of the logical part of me says that parents aren't necessarily objective when it comes to their children, and principles, other faculty, and students with an ax to grind can cause a lot of trouble for honestly good teachers. Those teachers need SOME level of protection. There are too many opportunities for things to go wrong for good teachers, and not enough ways to quantify performance, or verify alleged poor performances.

That said, the last few months I've been working 60+ hours/week (like the dedicated German boy I am) and I have to admit, I'm pretty farking tired.

True; the goal of life is work to live, not live to work. I guess my point is that the sense of entitlement in some countries is way out of whack.
