[quote=Casual Fan;276460]The pilot told the crew to bail and expected himself to die in the process. That's what soldiers do. But he was able to gain control of the plane and land in China. Then the Chinese reverse-engineered the plane over the course of 10 days and made their own.

Where does it say that they "reverse engineered" the plane and made their own? This is a P3 airframe which is a 1950's design first flown in the early 60's. Not exactly cutting edge secret technology, and it's something that a lot of other countries fly. Heck, there was even a commercial version of it that flew for the airlines back in the day. And I believe that they have been available in the private market for quite some time now (fire fighting companies buy them for example). The crew followed procedures to sanitize the plane before leaving it. The fact that they have such procedures tells you that it was not their obligation to die to protect what was inside. They did not have cyanide capsules like Francis Powers did over the USSR (who knows, that may even be an urban legend).
The pilot saw that he could land in China and give everyone a better shot at survival (bailing out over the ocean is still highly dangerous) even if it meant letting the Chinese have the plane. This is why I don't agree with your original statement that it was "stupid". The pilot brought his crew back alive and per protocol, that is all you can ask of him. At best the Chinese got their hands on an old airplane with maybe some interesting intel and equipment inside. I'd bet that most of that interesting stuff was ditched or destroyed before they got to it.
This Iran thing is plain stupid. The point of a drone is to keep a pilot out of danger. Since they are expendable, they should be rigged to self destruct at the first sign that they can't come home. That's some pretty high-end technology that we handed over to our enemy.
