‘we have no regrets’: Pelosi marks last day as speaker

WASHINGTON (AP/The Blaze) — Democrat Nancy Pelosi said she had no regrets on her last day as House speaker Tuesday, a reign that lasted four years and is ending after the November elections.

Pelosi said Tuesday she looks forward to leading a loyal but tenacious opposition in the House. She started by calling Republicans hypocrites for trying to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, saying it would add to the federal budget deficit.

Republicans won the House majority in the November elections and John Boehner of Ohio will be sworn in as the new speaker on Wednesday. Pelosi — the first female speaker — will be demoted to minority leader.

“I don’t really look back, I look forward, and we look forward to, as I said before, being a willing partner and solving the problems of the American people,” Pelosi said at a news conference with other House Democrats. “When our Republican colleagues have positive solutions, again, they will have a willing partner in solving the problems of the American people.”

Pelosi said House Democrats will focus on creating jobs, improving the economy and shrinking the federal budget deficit. The deficit hit $1.3 trillion in the budget year that ended in September — a year in which Democrats controlled Congress and the White House.

With unemployment stuck above 9 percent, Pelosi was asked whether she regretted not doing more to improve the nation’s still-struggling economy while she was speaker. Pelosi said the nation’s economy was in a “near-depression” two years ago, when Obama first took office.

I hope they do, but they only hold one of the three offices needed, the Democrats have the White house and the Senate. At the very least they will be able to stop crap from being pushed through with no debate.

They have to try and get this economy moving.

I sure wont miss Pelosi, but get real about the lack of debate, control, and power that the right had over the last 2 years. I guess that you forgot all about the record number of times that the right pulled the filibuster out of their hats.

With the way that the right is behaving right now, I don't see them making any serious moves to get anything substantial accomplished anyway. It's still the same old "we're going to fight anything and everything that the left puts out there!" routine.

Actions speak louder than words. I hope they actually get to work. The economy is growing again (way too slow though) and the jobs need to start happening. Projections are that there are a lot of companies ready to hire this year, we'll see if it happens.

In the meantime both parties need to get their heads out of their asses and put the public's needs first.

When can we start blaming Boehner for this economy? Isn't that how it works?

I wish they were able to stop the overreaching healthcare bill. So much was pushed through with little or no debate, no time to read, and get the people reaction.

We don't need the right or left to get thier way all the time, we need for them to have to meet in the middle. There has been much they have agreed on, look at the money they continue to spend (both sides).

I'm glad Pelosi is done too. She's always seemed a little impaired upstairs. Some of the wires are crossed or maybe not even connected at all.
