Sadly, there's a lot of people up near Traverse City who hate blacks.
Just look around.... Nothing but whitey.

Traverse City Record-Eagle - Local shop flies American flag upside down

Local shop flies American flag upside down

Hampel's employees call it a signal of 'distress'
By SHERI McWHIRTER
smcwhirter@record-eagle.com

TRAVERSE CITY -- Not everyone is excited about the nation's first
black president. Some are downright hostile.

Employees at Hampel's Key and Lockshop on Randolph Street in Traverse
City flew an American flag upside down Wednesday in protest of Sen.
Barack Obama's victory in the presidential election.

And one employee directed a racial slur at Obama during a telephone
interview with a Record-Eagle reporter.

"(The inverted flag is) an international signal for distress and we
feel our country is in distress because the n----- got in," said
Hampel's employee Rod Nyland, of Traverse City.

An hour later, Nyland apologized for the comment.

"I regret my choice of words. That was a poor choice and I apologize,"
he said. "It's probably not appropriate."

Hampel's Inc. is a gun and lock shop licensed by the state since 1989,
according to state records. City tax records show the shop is owned by
Karl Hampel of Traverse City, who could not be reached for comment.

Nyland said the upturned flag isn't meant to show disrespect to the
United States and no customers complained about it. In fact, several
customers agreed the nation is in "definite distress" after Obama's
election victory Tuesday, he said.

"The whole campaign he said it wasn't a racial issue, but all the
election coverage went right to how the first black man was elected
president," Nyland said.

Hampel's salesman Jack Fellows said he is a spokesman for the gun
shop. Nyland's comments weren't authorized and don't reflect his
opinions, nor those of Karl Hampel, Fellows said.

But Fellows said Nyland had it right about their display of the flag
as a distress warning for the country, he said.

"It's basically a display of alarm. The winning presidential candidate
was not our choice and has the worst anti-gun record in Congress, let
alone the Senate," Fellows said. "We feel we are facing a national
crisis. Fine rhetoric is one thing, but the gentleman has no executive
record whatsoever. He's not fitt to be president of the country."

Fellows said some gun owners are worried about their Second Amendment
rights under an Obama administration.

BUT, there's SOME civilized folks in TC....

Traverse City Record-Eagle - 5:40 p.m.: ‘N’ word prompts protest

5:40 p.m.: `N' word prompts protest
BY MELISSA DOMSIC
mdomsic@record-eagle.com

TRAVERSE CITY — Six-year-old Jayla Elsenheimer marched around the
sidewalk, brandishing a copy of today's Record-Eagle with "Shame on
you" written in red marker across the story of a local gun shop
employee who made racist remarks against President-elect Barack Obama.

Her mother, Angel Elsenheimer, stood beside her with a similar poster
and an American flag.

They displayed their patriotism in front of Hampel's Key and Lockshop
on Randolph Street in Traverse City, where shop workers on Wednesday
flew the American flag upside down in protest of Obama's victory in
Tuesday's presidential election.

A Hampel's employee, Rod Nyland, of Traverse City, was quoted in
today's paper calling Obama a " n-----" when explaining the gunshop's
inverted flag stance.

Elsenheimer protested after "reading in the article in the paper today
over breakfast with my family and trying to discuss with them exactly
what was wrong with what happened ... that something like this could
happen in such a small, relatively close-knit community is disgusting."

"It was a topic in a lot of the upper elementary classes today," said
Elsenheimer, who works at TCAPS Montessori school. "I think it's a
terrible, sad thing to not only see in the paper, but hear on the
radio, and children don't understand in a lot of cases. Trying to
explain that kind of hate is sad and challenging."

Hampel's on Thursday reversed course and flew the flag correctly.
---

I posted this on another message board, and here's one guy's response:

---

Quote:
I know people who are currently flying the flag upside down...but they will stop the instant Obama takes the oath. As long as Bushitler is still in office, they'll still fly it upside down.

I sure as hell don't trust the lame-duck bastard...

Texas' Buck Burnette Learns Why Racist Obama Facebook Updates Are Dumb

For those that don't know, Facebook status updates are broadcast to everyone you know. So, if you're going to post something that sounds racist or bigoted, well, don't.

Texas Longhorn lineman Buck Burnette learned this the hard way. See, here was Buck's Facebook status following Barack Obama's win in the presidential election:
"all the hunters gather up, we have a nigger in the whitehouse"
Geez, Buck. Even if you actually feel that way -- which is sad -- why not just keep it to yourself? You know, instead of telling five million people. But he didn't, and naturally, he is now paying the price; he's been kicked off the UT football team.

On the very tiny bright side, Burnette at least claims to be somewhat remorseful and not racist, issuing the following apology:
Clearly I have made a mistake and apologized for it and will pay for it. I received it as a text message from an acquaintance and immaturely put it up on facebook in the light of the election. Im not racist and apologize for offending you. I grew up on a ranch in a small town where that was a real thing and I need to grow up. I sincerely am sorry for being ignorant in thinking that it would be ok to write that publicly and apologize to you in particular. I have to be more mature than to put the reputation of my team at stake and to spread that kind of hate which I dont even believe in. Once again, I sincerely apologize.
Yeah, that's all fine and dandy, but it doesn't really help the whole situation.

And maybe Buck doesn't feel that way -- but I also, sadly, believe that there is a significant amount of this type of hatred still hanging around our country. After all, if there wasn't, Obama being the first African-American president wouldn't even be a big deal (or, at least, he might not be the first).

But to close out on a somewhat good note, this situation was resolved in a positive manner -- a young man acted in a totally unacceptable way, he immediately paid the price for it, and appears to recognize that it is completely of his own accord. It won't stop the hate, but at least visible consequences can maybe serve to curb some of those feelings.

Traverse City Record-Eagle - 10:30 am: Gun shop fires employee

10:30 am: Gun shop fires employee

Man directed racial slur at Obama
BY SHERI McWHIRTER
smcwhirter@record-eagle.com

TRAVERSE CITY — Officials at a local gun and lock shop fired an employee for flying the American flag upside down as a political statement and using a racial slur to describe President-elect Barack Obama, they said.

Rod Nyland of Traverse City was fired Thursday from Hampel's Inc. after about 25 years of employment there, and about a day after he referred to Obama as a n-----, said salesman Jack Fellows and locksmith Tom Hampel.

"He's out and we've taken actions to apologize to the community for his action," Fellows said.

Fellows and Hampel, son of owner Karl Hampel, spoke with the Record-Eagle today. They said they were embarrassed by the incident and wanted to publicly apologize.

"It's a huge embarrassment for me and I take this personally. I'm a Hampel and I'm very embarrassed about this," Hampel said.

They said Nyland raised the inverted flag on his own, without the knowledge of Karl Hampel.

When I walk around in uniform, people just assume I'm a republican. Interesting conversations at the gun shop I go to for ammo. Racism is still alive and well in many parts of this country.

Last time I went, the owner just went on and on about Obamination (play of words: "abomination") and how all the freights carrying handguns are being locked down. I couldn't help but laugh.

Traverse City Record-Eagle - Shop owners apologize for worker's slur

Shop owners apologize for worker's slur

BY SHERI McWHIRTER
smcwhirter@record-eagle.com

TRAVERSE CITY -- Owners of a local gun and lock shop fired a longtime employee who inverted an American flag and directed a racial slur at President-elect Barack Obama.

Hampel's Inc. acted to defuse community outrage over Wednesday's flag and slur incidents by publicly saying they'd fired employee Rodney Louis Nyland, 54, of Traverse City, on Thursday.

"He's out and we've taken actions to apologize to the community for his action," said Jack Fellows, a Hampel's salesman and spokesman.

Fellows and locksmith Tom Hampel, son of owner Karl Hampel, acknowledged receiving angry calls about Nyland's comments to the Record-Eagle after voters selected Obama to be the 44th president of the United States.

Nyland flew the American flag upside down on Wednesday and told a reporter he did so because it symbolized "an international signal for distress and we feel our country is in distress because the n----- got in."

An hour later, Nyland said, "I regret my choice of words. That was a poor choice and I apologize. It's probably not appropriate."

It wasn't enough. Readers flooded the Record-Eagle with letters to the editor, the story popped up on numerous Web logs, Hampel's took mostly negative phone calls, customers pledged to boycott the business, and a few people protested the store on Thursday and Friday.

Jon Butler, 27, and his friend Ryan Emerson, 23, both of Traverse City, stood outside Hampel's Thursday evening with an American flag and poster that read "Racism is not free speech."

"We hate blatant racism," Butler said. "It disgusts me."

Mary Pierce, a member of Traverse City's Human Rights Commission, said the incident will be discussed at the commission's 5:30 p.m. Monday meeting.

"I was absolutely shocked at what happened because our community has been, in general, so respectful of one another," Pierce said. "It was a shock that such blatant racism was expressed."

Nyland acted on his own to invert the flag, without Karl Hampel's knowledge, Fellows and Tom Hampel said.

Nyland could not be reached at his Traverse City home for comment.

"It's a huge embarrassment for me and I take this personally. I'm a Hampel and I'm very embarrassed about this," Tom Hampel said.

Some community members also voiced concern over the reversed flag.

The U.S. Flag Code states that the American flag should never be flown inverted "except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property." Experts suggest it is unreasonable to argue political protest constitutes dire distress.

Disabled World War II veteran Maury Cole, of Fife Lake, said the flag incident offended him. Since the flag flown above the store was desecrated by its inversion, Cole said, it should be properly removed, folded and turned over to a Veterans of Foreign Wars post for appropriate disposal.

"My concern was with the disgrace to the American flag," Cole said.

Quartermaster Doug Jordan, of the VFW Post 2780 in Traverse City, a Marine and Vietnam war veteran, said the post would accept Hampel's flag for disposal in a ceremony with other tattered flags.

"We'd accept it and destroy it and I think it would be appropriate because they displayed it improperly," Jordan said.

Jordan also said respect should be shown for the new commander in chief.

"It doesn't matter whether you voted for him or not," he said.

Fellows said Hampel's is not opposed to retiring the flag and said they did not intend to dishonor American veterans.

"We have always supported our veterans and are grateful for their service," he said. "We owe everything to these folks."

Meanwhile, Nyland won't lose his volunteer position with the Elmwood Fire Department in Leelanau County, said Chief Ray Haring.

"It has nothing to do with the fire department, as far as I know," Haring said. "He's an exemplary (emergency medical technician) and firefighter and it doesn't matter the color of your skin. (You) get the same good treatment from him."

Letter from Hampel's

November 7, 2008

Hampel's, Inc. and the Hampel family apologize to our community for the regrettable incident of Wednesday, November 5.

An individual employee, acting on his own, and not representing Hampel's, Inc., has offended us and our community with actions and words unacceptable in civil discourse.

We repudiate and condemn these acts and statements, and the offender has been dismissed. The Hampel family does not condone, nor will tolerate such behavior.

We defend the honor of the American flag, the dignity of the office of the President of the United States, and we respect the integrity of our President-elect Obama.

We ask for your forgiveness and your understanding for this very uncomfortable position into which we have been thrust.

We shall continue to serve our community with the same expertise and care as we have for the last 89 years.

-- The Hampel family and the staff of Hampel's, Inc.

----

For one thing, I have to applaud the Hampel family for firing Nyland. In the beginning, I wanted to tell people to boycott their store for doing what they did. However, one person doesn't represent the opinions of their store.

It will take time to rebuild their rapport with the community, especially in a time like this. What Nyland did was not only hurt the feelings of the racially sensitive, but also hurt America as well by screwing up her flag.

True, many are pissed over Obama's gun stance, but remember, BOTH Dems and Republicans own guns and respect our 2nd Amendment. Even John Kerry was seen toting a rifle while hunting during his 2004 campaign. Like the 1st Amendment, there should be some limitations to what people can do regarding the 2nd Amendment, such as who should own guns. Criminals nor the criminally insane, for instance should NEVER own a gun.

Traverse City is a town that's roughly 96% white. Traditionally, the town votes Republican, but since the Bush economy has caused a lot of homes to have a 'for sale' sign in the yard, the town helped vote in Obama. For years, it was a common thing for people from Detroit to move to Traverse City to "get away from the n****rs" because they blame them for the city's downturn. However, there's several towns not far from TC that resemble Detroit. Mancelona's one of 'em; the town of 1,400 has a lot of abandoned buildings, drugs and even teenage pregnancy. Even worse, that town's largest employer, Dura, is leaving town.

And even worse, the county where Mancelona is, Antrim, voted McCain this election by 10 percentage points.

I'm happy that Traverse City and northern Michigan has woken up and realized the good in black people. If there's people out there who stand for jerks like Rod Nyland, they should hang themselves.
