Default Google Voice

This Google Voice looks really cool. Why do they put these things out and then tell you they are by "invite only"?

PS - anyone have an extra invite for Google Voice they can spare?

I'd like to try one too.

I asked for an invite with google a while ago, too.

If you get some, let me know.

I'll do the same.

If it's anything like Google Wave it's nothing to write home about. I tried Wave once, and only once, that's all I needed to figure out it was useless for me. Since Google and Apple aren't playing nice on the iPhone anymore, this will be as well.

I have 3 google voice invites. MM, Harley, Do you still need/want one?

I got it around the time it launched and never used it, but now with it being sort of built in to my new Droid, I am going to tinker with it again.

edit: i saw this was posted just today so I am sending the invites to the both of you.

I used google voice until I realized that anybody could listen to the messages people left you. While they couldn't browse all of your messages they could listen to random messages.

Oh, I see google now fixed this. I may go back to it.

I have it and use it for one purpose, I give it to folks I do not want having my real phone numbers. For example in my clinics, I post it on the wall as a contact number for someone who wishes to file a complaint. Then I can set it to ring at my office, cell phone or both. This has allowed me to keep my cell phone private so that only family and very close friends have it.

There are many features I don't use and really have no interest in using. The voice mail works good and gets transcribed into a text message to my cell phone. It sucks at transcribing it though. But you also get an email with a link on the iPhone and I am sure other phones that you can play it.

Its a good service for being free!

I must say I am loving Google Voice. I have been using it when it was GrandCentral back in the day. I like the fact that I can setup contact list groups so when my family calls they get a different voicemail greeting then friends, work related calls, etc.

It's also nice for SMS since that is free with the service if you don't want to pay to do it from a cell phone. It's awesome for being able to type with a normal keyboard as well into a web browser.

I have 1 invite left if anyone would like it.

I don't think that anyone can listen to any voice mail. The instances that I recall reading were where a person actually shared the message with another person, or posted a link to the message somewhere.

I'd put it in the "nice to have" category. I don't use it all that much, but I do use it as a voice mail system for my cell phone. The VM to text transcription is pretty cool.

As DAB said, it's (really) good for the price. I might have an invite or two...

Grüpsaar was kind enough to send me an invite. I was nervous about changing my number though. so far, I really like the voicemail though.

I'd be all over Google Voice, but I don't use phones for talking much at all.
