This would suck if a third wave of attacks does come!

PlayStation Network Still Down as Sony Prepares for Possible Website Hack - Technorati Gaming

As if Sony wasn't under enough pressure after the two recent hackings on the PlayStation Network, a group of hackers indicated on Friday that the gaming giant could become victim to a third attack on the Sony Websites over the weekend.

The PlayStation Network and Qriocity music service have been “down for maintenance†since April 20 and has yet to be restored despite claims by Sony that both the tech team and investigators are working around the clock to get to the bottom of the mess left behind by a yet-to-be-identified hacking group.

The hacking group Anonymous has been at the blunt end of finger pointing since the hack occurred, but have released statements twice indicating that they were not responsible for the PSN outage.

"While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft,†said the most recent statement issued by Anonymous on May 5, 2011. Whether Anonymous was truly responsible for the PlayStation Network breach or if the group's recent threats to Sony are a cover for the real criminals remains to be seen.

If the weekend hacking attempt on Sony websites is successful the outcome could be disastrous not only for Sony, but its millions of users as well. An unnamed observer of the chat room reported that the hacking group intends to give public access to user information, with no exceptions to credit card data, names and addresses.

Sony was already in hot water when millions of users were denied access to the PlayStation Network during Easter weekend, but the matter has only been worsened by the vague and inconsistent updates Sony has provided to its angry users. However, Sony did entail in a letter to Congress that the attacks left behind widespread vulnerability.

“.. those who participated in the denial of service attacks should understand that — whether they knew it or not — they were aiding in a well planned, well executed, large-scale theft that left not only Sony a victim, but also Sony's many customers around the world."

News of the possible website attack over the weekend comes just one day after Sony CEO Howard Stringer issued an apology to users in addition to the promise of multiple free services once the PlayStation Network is back online. Though PSN was set to have “some services†back online by May 7, it is possible that a new attack could prolong those efforts further.

If it keeps going, it'll eventually be at the point where it's not worth reopening.

Consoles have a limited lifespan and every day that passes eats into that and the excitement wanes a little. Add that in with the 'lack of trust' and 'they're just incompetent' thoughts that'll likely float about and it could be that that won't turn it on again.

I think we're a few months out for that. Think, if by the end of August, they're still not open. Wouldn't you be at the point that if they opened Sept 1st you just wouldn't bother?

What if they were down still at the end of Nov? Same scenario.

People move on.

I saw a news article on the net yesterday, showing there a poll that some PSN users will probably start buying some Xbox's and join they're network. I'll try and find that article.

I found the article, that some Playstation users may switch to Xbox.

PSN Still Down, New Poll Shows Almost 40% May Switch To Xbox?

Sad but true, the SONY nightmare continues and our current poll regarding the situation shows many PS3 owners are unhappy with the PlayStation Network being down for so long

In a letter posted yesterday on their official blog, Howard Stringer, Sony's CEO, shared a few things about the PSN outage, including the free identity theft protection they're offering all PSN subscribers as part of their "Welcome Back" program:

To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely. We are also moving ahead with plans to help protect our customers from identity theft around the world. A program for U.S. PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers that includes a $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user was launched earlier today and announcements for other regions will be coming soon.

There's a bit more to the post, but most of the information contained within the letter we've read previously, but it's available here for those that are interested.

The key for most users is the fact that there hasn't been any official announcement as far as when to expect the network to be brought back online. The recent information available via the official blog leaves it vague at best, stating in the update from yesterday:

In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony.

We reported last week on PS3 Owners Switching To Xbox. Because the scale of the original poll wasn't very large, we decided to create our own poll and see what PS3 owners had to say about switching to Xbox 360. We've had over 12,500 users participate in our ongoing poll, and the results are somewhat dissapointing for Sony. Almost 40% of Playstation 3 owners have either switched to Xbox 360, or are thinking about it.

As of the time of this writing, the numbers are as follows:
• 14.3% (1,795 votes) have already switched
• 24.5% (3,070 votes) are thinking about switching
• 61.1% (7,653 votes) don't plan on switching consoles

I can start playing COD online again! :woohoo: Screw the store, that where all the bad luck happened there. I'm not giving Sony any new credit card #, if I have too unless the purchase download is something I really need.

I remember reading that VISA was working on a 'temporary VISA number' which would attach to your card and you could give it online and it would work but it had an expiry date within days or be good for 1 transaction. Not sure if that ever came to fruition.

I haven't heard anything about that, but it would be nice to get a free transaction with all the mess that happened.

Discover does that. I have a card number generator plug-in for Firefox that creates temporary Discover card numbers and fills out payment forms. I pay for everything with Discover, since they give me cash back.
