Default Mirrored Hard Drives Who's Got Em?

OK, I finally started looking for a mirrored external hard drive for my PC. I've had a single WD My Book for 6 years or so that's working well, but I want to be mirrored for more reliable data safety.

WD had a mirrored version, that hasn't gotten awesome reviews, and comes set up for Mac now.

Anybody have recommendations? I want something simple to operate, with dual 1 or 2 TB drives.

External or NAS?

If you want NAS, I've sung its praises here before: the D-Link DNS-323. Mine has two 2TB HITACHI Deskstar drives in it. It has an ARM CPU in there running Linux, and you can set up busybox on it with ease. Sturdy, reliable and cheap. It's on 24/7, so mine hosts the household printer and handles all of my bittorrents.

yeah, just do a nightly backup. Use an external dual hard drive setup as a raid 1 and SyncToy that's set to run nightly.

Yup, a NAS and nightly backup are the way to go. I have the lesser DNS-321 NAS and it's served me well. Although the processor is a bit slow so it'll never get close to gigabit speeds. The only time that comes into play is when you are doing a full restore, or replacing a drive in the NAS (you get to watch it copy files for 20 or more hours...). But a cheap NAS is a great way to keep a local backup. I don't bother with RAID in my NAS since I already have a copy of all the data in my PC, so I use the second drive as media storage for stuff that I watch and delete. I use Syncback to manage my automated nightly backups.

Cool, thanks for the info guys.

I had seen the DNS-320's. Hadn't gotten into reading much about them till now. They look pretty good. For the most part, I want it as a warehouse for my files. I didn't know if there were other options worth looking at.

That thing does a lot! The speeds don't bother my very much, and I have enough drives around I can make a separate image of my hard drive to restore any programs I have installed if my desktop takes a poo.

I do like the FTP server access and some of the other bells and whistles too.

Update:
The 323 does a little bit more than the 321, and seems to get better reviews than the 321. I don't know if I'll use the extras on the 323, but a lot of people seemed to get frustrated with the speed on the 321. I checked the dlink website, and they confirm that the WD Caviar Green 2TB works in it.

Could be my plan.

The 323 in RAID 1 with a gigabit network is fast enough for high def video, but it isn't a speed demon. I get about 12MB/second read or write.

When I build my PC I originally installed a WD 300 GB, but I almost maxed it out, so I now my mirrored hard drive is a WD 1 TB. I now got plenty space in my computer now.

I've got dual 250GB drives in the linux server in the basement - just simple software RAID1. I have several Buffalo Tech DriveStation Duo raid systems, too. They have performed OK, but their software to set up the devices is (well, was - not sure what the newer models use) crappy.

Hectic mentioned the WD models - I currently have one of the WD Studio 2TB (raw) drives at work - mirrored for 1TB total. I'm mainly using that for Time Machine backups. Fits the bill just fine for that - can't speak to how it handles itself as a file store.

How's the Time Machine backups working out for you. I'm running it right now on my MBP, from what I read I could copy the entire drive onto a new computer (I may be getting an iMac before too long) and have it work.

They work great. I've done it twice now, most recently from my work Macbook to a new iMac. Since Time Machine doesn't back up system files, you still would have to do a fresh OS install, but once that is done, you can then restore the rest of your stuff toward the end of the installation.
In the case of a new system, you can just run Migration Assistant manually. (though if memory serves, the first time you boot up the new system, it asks if you want to migrate as part of the initial setup process.)
