Image: http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/5697/social20100901.jpg

Apple today introduced iTunes 10 with Ping, a new music-oriented social network...

Apple today introduced iTunes 10 with Ping, a new music-oriented social network for following your favorite artists and friends to discover what music they're talking about, listening to and downloading. iTunes Ping lets you post your thoughts and opinions, your favorite albums and songs, the music you've downloaded from iTunes, plus view concert listings and tell your friends which concerts you plan to attend. iTunes 10 also features HD TV show rentals for just 99 cents an episode and AirPlay wireless music playback.

"iTunes is the number one music community in the world, with over 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, and now we're adding social networking with Ping," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "With Ping you can follow your favorite artists and friends and join a worldwide conversation with music's most passionate fans."

Ping lets you follow your favorite artists to see what they're up to, check out photos and videos they've posted, see their tour dates and read comments about other artists and albums they're listening to. You can also create a profile on iTunes to let your friends know who you're following, what you're listening to and which concerts you're going to. There's no better way to discover new music than to find out what your friends are listening to, and Ping's Recent Activity feed shows you their posts about artists, albums, songs and concerts, plus a consolidated Top 10 list of the songs and albums your friends and the artists you follow are downloading from iTunes. In addition to using Ping on your desktop computer, you can take it with you on your iPhone or iPod touch, so you're always plugged into your personal music scene.

With iTunes 10, you can rent your favorite HD TV shows commercial free from ABC, ABC Family, Fox, Disney Channel and BBC America and watch them at home or on the go for just 99 cents an episode. Thousands of episodes are available, many the day after broadcast, to watch on your Mac or PC, iPhone, iPod touch and the all-new Apple TV, and you have 30 days from the moment you rent an episode to start watching it, and 48 hours after that to finish it.

iTunes 10 also features AirPlay wireless music playback to listen to your music on remote speakers using Apple's AirPort Express® base station. In addition, AirPlay now works without AirPort Express, using speakers, receivers and stereo systems from companies including Bowers & Wilkins, JBL, Denon and iHome, so you can enjoy your entire iTunes music library wirelessly from any room in the house with no extra gear required.

iTunes 10 is available immediately as a free download at Apple - iTunes - Everything you need to be entertained.

In addition to the above press release apple also updated the iTunes logo/icon removing the CD entirely.

Apple also updated the iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, Apple TV and iPod Touch today.

You can get more information on these new products at Apple.com

Is this Sirius XM 2.0?

Image: http://drmag.tss-radio.com//home/drmag/drmagazine/uploads//2010/09/siriusxm20.jpg

A recent Patent...

A recent Patent from XM Radio has surfaced from June 19th, 2008 that might just give us some hints to the Upcoming Satellite Radio 2.0 service mentioned by Mel Karmazin during the 2010 Second Quarter Conference Call.

During that conference call Karmazin stated the following about Satellite Radio 2.0

Our next generation of satellite radios are expected to offer significantly more choices for the consumer and contain functionality that does not exist today in our radios.

If anything in this patent pertains to this new service (Launching in Holiday 2011) expect Sirius XM to change the way you listen to Satellite Radio. Not only that, this could change the Future of Satellite Radio as we know it.

According to the Abstract for Patent Number 20090320075:

A method and apparatus are provided for generating a personalized radio channel playlist by time division multiplexing songs from multiple received channels from one or more broadcast source streams in a queue. Users can specify favorite channels for building their personal playlists, or multiple default playlist channels can be provided by genre. Navigation tools permit users to see upcoming songs in their playlist queue and skip ahead and backward. Thumbs up/down buttons on the radio receiver permit entering a song or artist being played back into a favorites list that is used to search all channels for matches or a banned list used to block songs from future playlists. If matches are found, the channel carrying the favorite is extracted and added to the playlist. Channel searching for matches involves monitoring real-time song and artist labels for all channels carried in a separate data channel (e.g., Broadcast Information Channel (BIC)). Segments on the playlist are dynamically truncated to reduce the average time each segment is played to facilitate preview of playlist segments. Preview times can vary depending on the size of the playlist or number of channels used. During a preview of a segment, users can opt to listen to the full song or back up in the playlist to listen to a previous song. Connectivity options and web interfaces are provided to facilitate transfer and sharing of customization parameters for personalized radio configuration.

If any of the above sounds familiar, it is. Mentioned in this patent are well know services Pandora, LastFM and Slacker.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003]On-line personalized radio service has demonstrated its appeal to music fans as evidenced by the continued growth of personalized radio service providers such as Pandora, LastFM and Slacker. These providers assemble personalized playlists for users by accessing a large music library where each song has a metadata field containing ratings on multiple stylistic parameters. A user inputs a preferred music style, and the provider’s system extracts songs from the library for the playlist based on correlation to the song metadata field. Advantageously, users are provided with the capability to accelerate their discovery of new content which is largely aligned with their personal preferences, by skipping over content in the playlist which the user finds uninteresting.

The great thing about this patent is that Sirius XM would not need to update or deploy any new or existing satellites for this service to work. Satellite Radio 2.0 would be a Hardware/Software solution built into these future receivers, think in line of the Slacker G2. This new service would share the current Like and Dislike options that are currently used on other services. But unlike Slacker and Pandora, Satellite Radio 2.0 would differ with it’s over 100 Channels ranging from Sports, Talk and Comedy to News and Music, something that would definitely make Satellite Radio 2.0 “contain functionality that does not exist today in our radios”

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002]The present invention relates to a system and method for providing a broadcast radio service listener with the ability to generate a personalized radio channel playlist on a radio receiver from broadcast content as it is received. More specifically, the present invention relates to a system and method for buffering content from a set of channels selected from among the broadcast channels of a source stream(s) as they are received, and for generating a playback stream using the buffered content that provides a multi-channel listening experience to the user with preview, reverse, fast forward and other navigation functions for the buffered content.

Based on the information above the new receivers would be Buffering (Caching) the live streams allowing you to create a personal channel. Did you say Satellite Radio OnDemand?

The XM Radio Patent also states that “Satellite radio offers more than 100 channels of audio content. After initially exploring the content offering, subscribers typically narrow their listening choices to 10 or fewer favorite channels, which may be any combination of music and talk channels. For example, a subscriber may prefer listening to popular music and may preset 5 or 6 popular music channels on the radio, along with a comedy channel and news channel. With present radio receiver hardware, the subscriber is limited to listening to one channel at a time and therefore misses the opportunity to be exposed to content simultaneously broadcast on the other favorite channels. A need therefore exists for a satellite digital audio radio service (SDARS)-based personal radio service that provides the subscriber with an option to be exposed to content simultaneously broadcast on multiple channels selected for building a personalized radio channel playlist.” “In addition, conventional personalized radio services do not carry news, live concerts or sports events which some users might like in a personalized radio channel playlist. A need therefore also exists for an SDARS-based personal radio service that allows the subscriber to select from among the diverse content channels simultaneously broadcast in an SDARS stream to build a personalized radio channel playlist from both music channels and talk channels (e.g., news, sports or comedy channels), the content of which is not typically provided in the on-line libraries of conventional personalized radio service providers.”

There is a ton of great information to read in this patent, from How they will use the existing Satellites and Repeaters to live broadcasts (events) and navigation. I suggest any fan of SiriusXM that a quick look and read over the patent. As of right now this is all speculation but based on Karmazin’s words from the conference call this could well be Satellite Radio 2.0.

Pandora, the leading personalized radio service, today announced that listeners now have more ways than ever to kick-off their personalized listening...

Pandora, the leading personalized radio service, today announced that listeners now have more ways than ever to kick-off their personalized listening experience on Pandora with a new option to create radio stations by selecting a musical genre. Until now, stations on Pandora were created when listeners entered the name of a favorite artist, song, or composer. These carefully curated genre stations give listeners a new and easy path into the world of personalized radio, where simple 'thumbs-up' and 'thumbs-down' actions let people shape the stations to their individual tastes.

Senior Music Curator Michael Zapruder said, "Our listeners have been telling us for a while that they'd like an easy way to start a station from popular genres with the option to personalize the station from there. We wanted to find a uniquely Pandora way to address this consumer need so we created a number of genre stations that are carefully seeded with relevant songs and constantly refreshed with new releases."

A number of these new genre stations – specifically "Today's Hits," "Today's Country," and "Today's Hip Hop and Pop Hits," are already among the top 100 most frequently listened to stations on Pandora. The newly launched genre stations include:

More than 100 other micro-genre stations have also been created for listeners who are looking for a different type of station creation option, including: Alternative, Blues, Christian, Classical, Country, Easy Listening, Electronic, Family, Folk, Holiday, Indie, Jazz, Latin, New Age, and World. The full list can be viewed by clicking the 'Genre stations' button on the Pandora homepage, a link on the 'Create a New Station' panel, or by visiting www.pandora.com/genres.

You must be logged into Pandora to see this new feature.

Orbitcast - So what is "Satellite Radio 2.0"?

Image: http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/satellite-radio-02.jpg With "Satellite Radio 2.0"...

With "Satellite Radio 2.0" being more than a year away it's still too early to speculate so... let's do some speculating based off of the clues that we do have.

Here's what we know about Satellite Radio 2.0:

These will be "next generation" satellite radios

They'll offer "more choices" to the consumer

Contain capabilities "that does not exist today"

Next gen satellite radios will be available in both retail and OEM channels

It's the last point that tells me that this is a complete change to the actual satellite radio services being offered, and not just iterative updates to the receivers (as we've seen over the past few years).

The fact that we're looking at more choices and new capabilities, combined in both Retail receivers and OEM receivers, tells me that the company is ready to shift it's total product offering.

Looking At The Past, To Predict The Future

I've definitely been frustrated by the lack of ground-breaking functionality in satellite radio receivers. Sure, things were great when we started to see split-screen functionality, and then later came the awe-inspiring (insert sarcasm) functionality of upgrading to a color display - but let's face it, color is something that's expected nowadays and not necessarily revered.

For a while, it seemed that satellite radio was finally catching up to the technological advances made by their satellite TV brethren. And then it all stopped.

Yes, the XM Skydock was a breakthrough, because finally - finally - Sirius XM decided it was "ok" to decouple the interface from the brains of the receiver. But this is hardly a new concept in the world of consumer electronics.

So, if we follow the past technological trends, what is it that Sirius XM Radio Inc. will offer to consumers now?

One More Clue

There's one more clue that Mel Karmazin dropped during the Q2 conference call that I think will help contribute to the discussion.

When asked about the company's long-term pricing strategy, Karmazin responded:

"As you know we are currently constrained by the FCC order where we agree to not increase the basic pricing for a period of three years. That goes throughout August of 2011. We believe that when the FCC looks at all of the choice that is are available in audio entertainment, that they would see no reason to further restrain us, but we will have to wait to see what happens there. And then we will take a look at what our decision will be on any changes that we want to make going forward in offering additional pricing alternatives."

Interesting. August 2011 is the FCC's deadline for re-visiting the subscription pricing for satellite radio. How convenient, then, that "satellite radio 2.0" will be made public right around the same period?

Sirius XM can't simply tell the FCC to unlock their pricing structure without showing a significant change to the product offering. They need to bring some new core functionality to the table and ensure that the FCC sees that they're not "offering additional pricing alternatives" without any payoff.

So great, with all that as inputs, here's what I think satellite radio 2.0 will be about. And they involve two main core pieces of added functionality to the current satellite radio offering:
.

#1. Audio On Demand

Looking at other subscription models, it's proven now that consumers want on-demand services. Video On Demand (VOD) is now pretty commonplace across most providers, and allows consumers to simply pick from a limited selection of shows, movies and other kinds of programming - and watch on their own schedule.

So it only makes sense that Sirius XM would follow along with this trend and make their own "audio on demand" service available. It's something that AM/FM doesn't offer, and it serves as a melded alternative to some of the "personalized music" experiences from providers like Slacker and Pandora.

But how would Sirius XM technically pull this off?

There's any number of ways (and I'd love for my savvy readers to chime in here), but one thought I have is essentially a "push" service. The receivers would need to be equipped with far more capacity than they have today (high-capacity storage is mighty cheap nowadays afterall) and would need to be able to access a "hidden" channel. Through that hidden channel, the receiver would download a limited selection of audio entertainment.

Then the "on demand" feature would simply call up the pre-stored material on the device. And since capacity is limited, Sirius XM would just need to rotate out the selections on a regular basis (once a week, for instance).

#2. Love and Hate

Speaking of "personalized music" experiences like Pandora and Slacker, there's no doubt in my mind that Sirius XM is eying this territory. It's something I mentioned in my roundtable interview for The Motley Fool with my cohort from SiriusBuzz. Mel Karmazin is without question watching these companies and seeing the consumer trends they're creating. The ability to customize your listening experience may soon become as commonplace as channel surfing.

So again, how would Sirius XM do this?

My theory is that it would have to be connected to the internet somehow. Be it through a wireless broadband connection (think of the Amazon Kindle and it's free 3G capabilities) or through a WiFi link (say, when the vehicle is parked or the device is docked).

If the listener is able to "heart" a song, the receiver could automatically download related music once it gets connectivity. If a song is "hated" then the device calls up the pre-downloaded music, and will queue the live satellite stream in the background. It's no different than pause/replay functionality in current receivers, but with the stored music substituting for silence.

Are my theories way off, or do you think I'm on to something? I would love to hear your thoughts.
