Looks like one of the fixes was for Bluetooth. That is one area which I have found less than satisfactory at least with my el-cheapo BlueTooth device (which worked well with my other phone).

They also say they have fixed the proximaty issue.

Did a trip into the good old USA last week. Our carrier up here is Bell. Rogers is their chief compeditor and is aligned with AT&T in the states. Our old phones used to use a variety of networks but none of them AT&T for that reason.

When we crossed into Detroit, our iPhones flipped onto the AT&T network. Not too surprising given the exclusive contract with AT&T in the states. I figured it trumped the Bell vs. Rogers stuff.

However, I did notice on occassion I would get T-Mobile service. In Columbus, OH this happened several times (AT&T had absolutly horrible coverage there). Near Buffalo, NY, there are extremely strong T-Mobile coverage.

So, how can an iPhone (non-jailbroken but Canadian) get T-Mobile service in a region where T-Mobile cannot offer an iPhone for their network?

For the record, we did not use our phones in the States except via WiFi. Here are the rates I would have been charged for use:

$1.45 / minute for voice calls
$0.75 per text sent
$50.85 per Mb data uploaded or downloaded via 3G.

We bought a cheap pay as you go phone for use down there.

It may be easy but being on a trip got me thinking. What if I had synced my iPhone4 with my laptop? Would it have wiped out the content of my iPhone4 or updated the contents of my laptop? If the former, what if my PC dies and I have to get a new one. How do I recover/sync my iPhone4 with my new PC? How should I be doing the backup?

So far I am very happy with the device. It's pretty fun so far.

Now I need some app ideas.

I did my first sync and OS upgrade with my iPhone4 last night. Not sure why I was dreading it. It was smooth and painless. I am still not an Apple fanboy but I do have to give them credit. All the pieces fit together nicely.

And I am loving this phone. Just the other day I got a "LinkedIn" connection request from a co-worker. My workplace blocks access to that site. I typically forward the request home and deal with it there. Instead, I did forward it to my home e-mail but popped out my iPhone on the spot and accepted the link (there is a restaurant next to my workplace that offers free wifi to all the customers -- I am on that side of the building so I pick up their wifi signal). It completely changes how you think of the world.

My wife plugged her phone into iTunes last night and it said there was an upgrade (4.0.2?) and it started to download. She left it overnight. This morning, the phone is frozen with about 1/10 of a progress bar showing below an Apple logo. It will not respond to any button pushes, etc. Is there a 'device recovery' procedure or a reset button or a way to 'pull the battery' or are we dealing with the carrier and/or Apple for a warrentee replacement?

This is my third iphone; 3g, 3gs and now ip4. This is also the first time I ever damaged one of them. 6PM yesterday, I was on the phone, cradling the phone between my ear and shoulder and it slipped out and landed face down on the corner of a step leading from my garage to my mud room. It landed with an audible SPLAT. I knew it didn't sound good and when I turned the phone over it was smashed into smithereens. I immediately checked for any available Genius Bar appointments and grabbed the first one I could which was at 9:30am today. The phone itself still works perfectly. It was surreal being in my local mammoth shopping Mall Apple Store with all the OTHER stores not yet open but only a handful of nerds like myself lining up at the Genius Bar. I met with "Marty", (female). Nice gal. She said I would have to purchase a new phone, (since the display itself was damaged - it is; I can see a brown discoloration in one spot behind the glass - AND it is out of the 30 day warranty - barely.). The cost to me was going to be $199. I balked and asked her to please check my account and all the merchandise that I've purchased over the years which included 6 iphones, 2 ipads, numerous ipods, etc. She verified my claim and spoke with her manager and then said that she would be able to replace my iP4 with a new, (not refurb), iP4 for free. THAT, my friends, is what makes good customer service. The irony of this whole episode is that while I Was destroying my iP4 by dropping it, sitting on my front steps - just delivered - was my new Seido Innocase Surface Combo 2 that I pre-ordered 6 weeks ago. I think the Seido case would have protected the iP4 better than the iFrogz case that I currently have.

Got back from my vacation yesterday and went to the Bell store today. I am now on the waiting list for the iPhone 4. I figured by now, they would have handled all the initial demand. On the 30th, the demand was so great it crashed the Rogers activation system. Stores which sold all services were putting Rogers customers to the side while they serviced other providers since the system was down.

They say the wait will be days rather than weeks.
