With Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich they can't put apps on that you can't delete. User can delete any of the apps, at least that is one of the features that they talk about in the presentation overview.

You can't actually uninstall the carrier crapps, ICS will introduce app freezing. Freezing apps is something rooted users have been able to do for some time.

Once an app is frozen it can't run at all. It disappears from your app list and doesn't prompt you to update when a new crappy version is released.

Not uninstalling, but a very worthwhile feature.

I did a lot of freezing and found that it's really not all that necessary. Most of the stuff you see "running" on your phone really isn't running in the sense that it is consuming memory or CPU cycles. Basically if you are not using the app it isn't doing anything but being an annoying entry in a list. Android does a great job of managing system resources. I started to get my best performance after I stopped trying to "fix" things myself and just let the phone do what it does.

I am getting pumped for a new phone next year. Still love my Droid X but 2 years with the same phone is a long time!

That's good to know. I am annoyed by seeing all of those things show up. If they aren't really using my resources, I won't worry about them.

Sorry, but that's not totally accurate. I have 3 Verizon crapps running right now (Slacker, TuneWiki and My Verizon) using a combined 75MB of RAM and 42% of CPU.

Can it be ignored? Yeah, for the most part it can be ignored. Android does do a fair job of managing these things. But it's not just an annoying entry in a list, it's an actual hit on your available resources and battery life.

Every one of those CPU cycles affects battery. That RAM usage does affect battery.

That's odd. I have Verizon and I don't have Slacker or TuneWiki. When I use OS Monitor to look at CPU usage, the phone is entirely idle most of the time. Every once in a while processes like Motorola Services, weather, contacts storage, etc. wake up and consume 1% or 2%, but then it all goes back to sleep.

What are Slacker and TuneWiki doing with those cycles? And why did Verizon install them on your phone and not mine?

Other than the My Verizon app, I don't have any of those on my phone. And My Verizon is not using any system resources unless I run it.

And what app are you using to view system resources?

Yes, they absolutely do. The newer the phone or the newer your OTA update the more crapps they install for you.

My wife's Incredible was unuseable out of the box because of Skype. I rooted her phone on day 1 to fix that issue.

And I am using Watch Dog to see exactly what is running without root. It isn't a task manager, it notifies you if an app goes of the resource chart and gives you the option to kill it.

It isn't something that I keep installed, but I'm using it now doing some app testing. Watch Dog itself tends to be a little hard on the resources so I install it when I need it.
